GUEST ARTIST: “Watercolor Is A State Of Mind” by Mimi Dimova

Hello! My name is Mimi Dimova, I am from Bulgaria, but for a very long time (the past 25 years), I’ve lived in Russia. Three years ago, I saw on the Internet a picture of the artist-genius from Bulgaria that was in watercolor. It was night, and in the morning I knew that I would like to paint! With watercolor!!

My husband looked at me like I was crazy. I had never held a brush in my hand… ever! I wrote the artist a letter, and interestingly enough, he arrived in Moscow with a master class in a few days! This was my first and only master class.

He put the brush in my right hand and said, “start and do not give up.” So, I did not refuse, although a female artist, who was next to me in this master class, said, when we have a flower-pattern down: you are unlikely to succeed, do not torment yourself.

I am 56 years old and I was 53 when I started. I paint almost every day and it saves me! I do not crave rewards as not many have heard of my work (other than family and close friends). I’m just learning, and it gives me great pleasure and feels true to me! I draw all that excites me and inspires me to a certain point. Nothing concrete. The main thing is that I paint something that is good and beautiful.

I did not have much in the way of watercolors. That morning when I knew I wanted to paint, I immediately bought some and began!Watercolor is a state of mind, that is sometimes conscious, sometimes impulsive. But it is always very strong and sincere.

For three years, I have been painting with watercolors and do not stop. Again and again, I am surprised by its beauty. I paint almost every day and call my pictures “evening exercise!” And so it will be, as long as I think these paintings deserve to be called pictures!

I forgot to write the titles of these paintings. But it is not so important, just so it is clear that this is my life. It is different and always very varied. And, therefore, my paintings are always very different! But all of them are taken directly from my life. And all I have!

Thank you for taking the time to look at my pictures! In each of my paintings are my soul! And I am happy when it gives other people pleasure! I wish you all success!

  1. Wow! Mimi, your paintings are beautiful. And you are correct, they are all different which shows your versatility! This was very inspiring as I am dabbing into watercolor and sketching as well and lately have made more time for it and even signed up for a watercolor class at the local Art School – so I think i relate to what you felt when you saw the watercolor art that got you started – I too was impressed with what people can do with it and am dying to get better! Keep at it – your art is already amazing in my opinion!

  2. Hello Mimi, your story is almost an exact replica of mine. I started with watercolours 2 years ago – and I am 56 years of age like you too! You have one more year of experience than I do and I can only hope that in 12 months time I will be able to post watercolours as impressive as yours are. To produce such beautiful work in such a short period of time is inspiring. Congratulations and best wishes.

  3. Wow, you’re work is beautiful! I admire your talent and your courage to keep up the discipline of practicing after such a harsh, rude comment. It certainly paid off.
