Written by So as we close out this month’s Celebration of Food, I would be remiss not to wish everyone a Happy Pomegranate Month. Sorry for the late notice, just in case you’ve been holding onto your pomegranate and waiting for just the right moment to celebrate it. Well, wait no longer, the time is now. For all of you out there sketching along with me, today was the perfect time to paint your pomegranate, and it’s been wonderful to see your beautiful creations! This is another ancient fruit that was enjoyed by the Egyptians. Well, enjoyed might be a bit of stretch as the appearance of one back then was often a signal that you were having a particularly crappy day. It was used to treat various infections, so it was highly likely that, if you were an Ancient Egyptian, your pomegranate arrived mostly for the distasteful task of dispatching of your tapeworms.
As for myself, I’m not a huge fan of pomegranate. The flavor is fine, but the crunchy seeds create a texture issue that I don’t find very pleasing. This is probably why my favorite fruit is a pear… just smooth and delicious with no weird surprises. But as a painting subject, pomegranate is truly challenging, and I’m not sure if I’ve done it justice, but it was fun to attempt one for the first time ever. It’s a rather bizarre fruit, considering all of the “meat” is clinging to seeds, and it has wonderful details that I simply didn’t have the time to study properly. Perhaps one day I’ll try another one when I’ve a bit more time. I didn’t add “patience” as that’s not likely to come anytime soon for me.
Tomorrow is the start of a brand new adventure! It’s both exciting and bittersweet to see the end of a month come. I’ve so enjoyed indulging in food paintings once more, but now it’s time to mix things up a bit and herald in the icons of the season. I’ve said it a million times, but December is my absolute favorite month of the year and I’m ecstatic that it’s back again! This year, I don’t have much on my Christmas list. I’m just so thankful and thrilled to have my little home and my family. The extended one, of course, but also the tiny one consisting of just a Frenchman and a basenji. We’ll all be curled up in front of the fireplace soon, enjoying a little rest, surrounding by the flickering lights of the season. And that’s pretty much the best present anyone could ever ask for!

Lovely painting as always, Charlie. You really captured the little jewels of the pomegranate. I absolutely adored pomegranates as a kid. My Granddad would buy them for me as a treat – each week he bought me an exotic fruit – and I absolutely loved everything about them. Then one day in my early teens I opened a pomegranate and found an earwig “nest” inside. That put me right off pomegranates for years. It took me getting into my thirties and wanting to introduce my kids to lots of different fruits and veggies that I tried them again and was instantly hooked again. These days I don’t tend to eat them as a standalone fruit snack though and instead sprinkle all the little juicy seeds all over salads or other meals.

Gorgeous, vibrant, I adore the shiny seeds, plump and juicy, you have painted a scrummy ripe beast of a fruit….the outer casing is such a chore to get into, and when cutting you get squirted in the eye by a pip exploding, like an attack defence to the inner glory. He he. Love this one Charlie. Now I can’t wIt for December, I do not buy an advent calender, but I don’t need to worry, opening up my iPad, each morning will bring me an even more special count down to Christmas, as I anticipate what your next doodlewash will joy us all with 😀

Such a lovely painting, Charlie.. I have only once had a taste of a pomegranate and I can’t even remember what it tasted like. Being a Midwest gal, I tend to stay with the same safe, boring fruits and veggies that I grew up with. I love to see all the different choices in the markets, but too afraid to try them. I guess I will enjoy them from a distance! Thanks for the colorful paintings every day!!

I think you did it justice – punchy and exotic! I must admit I too am not a big pomegranate fan, but the parrot loves them… or rather, she loves throwing seeds around the place and eating very little. But it’s quite amusing!

The pomegranate is one of my very favorite fruits and you did it justice. You didn’t include a flower but it’s lovely also, like a tiny dark pink trumpet. Your pom de pair are gorgeous, just the perfect shape and color with plenty of authentic detail. I love seeing them, eating them, drawing them, and I like the pomegranate symbolism that’s in many cultures and faiths.
