This doodlewash takes us to The Liberty Memorial and National World War I Museum, which is the only American museum solely dedicated to this war. I actually sketched this from the other side back when it first started sketching but I figured it deserved a spot on the official KC tour.

I went very loose again and used a fairly limited palette of Cobalt Blue (with a touch of Cobalt Teal), Azo Orange (watered down to appear more yellow), Raw Umber, Azo Green, Sap Green, and Burnt Sienna. I’m starting to notice my little 3.5 x 5″ Moleskine is feeling a bit small, but I’m going to continue with it until this tour concludes.

There’s a flame that sometimes appears at the top of the memorial, but the costs of running it often leave it dormant. They fortunately figured out a way to reduce costs with new technology, and can also now control the flame via an iPad. It’s a really wonderful museum with lots of interactive exhibits and documentary-style storytelling.

I realized in the first post when I drew this that I didn’t write very much. I know it was because it’s difficult for me to avoid failing into some random crazy story and that didn’t seem fitting for a subject like this. So instead I’ll let the museum have the last word. “The Liberty Memorial is a beacon of freedom and a symbol of the courage, patriotism, sacrifice, and honor of all who served in World War I.”

  1. Look at you go and grow Charlie O! How far you have come in a few short months in your doodling and painting. And i think your reverance to this subject is sweet. I am reading a book for our book club (that is this Saturday and I am CRAMMING – just like I did in school when it involved history – the book is called Dead Wake – about the Lusitania – a World War I Story – struck me interesting that we are both thinking of WWI at this moment. Life is so interesting and our connections with people blow me away.

      1. Oh – we have the BEST BOOK CLUB EVER! It is a couple’s group and we ALWAYS stay overnight as it is a teensy bit more about drinking wine….. but we do have amazing discussions about the books – a diverse group of ages and opinions makes for the most lively discussions! You and Phillipe would so enjoy!

  2. I love your commentaries, but sometimes the view is evocative enough – great drawing, and a very worthy leg of the Kansas (City!) tour.

You can see the growth in confidence from July to September in comparing the two sketches. I look forward to seeing what you’re up to in another couple of months!
