This doodlewash takes us to The Liberty Memorial and National World War I Museum, which is the only American museum solely dedicated to this war. I actually sketched this from the other side back when it first started sketching but I figured it deserved a spot on the official KC tour.
I went very loose again and used a fairly limited palette of Cobalt Blue (with a touch of Cobalt Teal), Azo Orange (watered down to appear more yellow), Raw Umber, Azo Green, Sap Green, and Burnt Sienna. I’m starting to notice my little 3.5 x 5″ Moleskine is feeling a bit small, but I’m going to continue with it until this tour concludes.
There’s a flame that sometimes appears at the top of the memorial, but the costs of running it often leave it dormant. They fortunately figured out a way to reduce costs with new technology, and can also now control the flame via an iPad. It’s a really wonderful museum with lots of interactive exhibits and documentary-style storytelling.
I realized in the first post when I drew this that I didn’t write very much. I know it was because it’s difficult for me to avoid failing into some random crazy story and that didn’t seem fitting for a subject like this. So instead I’ll let the museum have the last word. “The Liberty Memorial is a beacon of freedom and a symbol of the courage, patriotism, sacrifice, and honor of all who served in World War I.”

Excellent work, Charlie! Love how you painted the sky! Sounds like a great museum – but I do like hearing your stories too! 😊
Thanks Jill! ❤️😃I need to find something less reverent to sketch so I can speak freely. 😉
As always, terrifically engaging. I am really liking how you seem to so effortlessly move from color to color and include shadow. I see shades of green and even yellow in there. Cool.
Thanks Kirk!! I’m getting a little freer with just going for it! Hehe…never sure what will come out, but it’s fun to just try!
Look at you go and grow Charlie O! How far you have come in a few short months in your doodling and painting. And i think your reverance to this subject is sweet. I am reading a book for our book club (that is this Saturday and I am CRAMMING – just like I did in school when it involved history – the book is called Dead Wake – about the Lusitania – a World War I Story – struck me interesting that we are both thinking of WWI at this moment. Life is so interesting and our connections with people blow me away.
Wow…that’s a crazy coincidence! So cool!! ❤️😃I only tried a book club once and ending up cramming in the same way. I tried to suggest a picture book for our next read and was promptly kicked out of the club.
Oh – we have the BEST BOOK CLUB EVER! It is a couple’s group and we ALWAYS stay overnight as it is a teensy bit more about drinking wine….. but we do have amazing discussions about the books – a diverse group of ages and opinions makes for the most lively discussions! You and Phillipe would so enjoy!
Could we just show up for the last half? Sounds like the best part! Lol 😉
Well….. since it’s YOU Charlie O – I guess 🙂
LOL 😊👍🏻
This is like a book of postcards…”Best of KC”.
Washington DC has a really beautiful WW I Memorial, but no museum. I like the contrast of building shapes and sizes here. (K.)
Thanks Kerfe! I actually now realize I should have done all of these on postcards! Lol😊😊that would have been cool!
Well, there’s a future project!
Hehe…I have so many projects to do! One day! 😉
Likewise. Or in my dreams anyway.
There are so many great things about this piece, I don’t know where to begin, so I’ll just give you a thumbs-up. 🙂
Thanks friend!! ❤️Out of all the fingers on the hand, that’s the one I always prefer most! 😉
LOL!
Another nice doodlewash! You are great at mixing colors! There are so many shades of green here.
Thanks Kari! ❤️😃I honestly didn’t know which green I liked after mixing a few so I sort of used them all 😊
Beautiful painting sketch Charlie, and great tribute to our WW1 vets. As always, Tbe KC tour is fascinating.
Thanks Sharon my friend!! I’m really glad you’re enjoying it! 😃
Lovely sketch. Your buildings are so beautiful and interesting, almost like they are from another time.
Awww…why thank you Haunani! That’s pretty cool! 😃❤️
I agree with Huanani and I hope I spelled her name right. This is simply, beautifully (appropriately) done, both image and text. Well done, Charlie. Well done. 💛💜💛
You did I think…my autocorrect usually likes to make up nicknames for her. Thanks Laura!! 💜😃 glad you liked this one!
I love your commentaries, but sometimes the view is evocative enough – great drawing, and a very worthy leg of the Kansas (City!) tour.
You can see the growth in confidence from July to September in comparing the two sketches. I look forward to seeing what you’re up to in another couple of months!
Me too actually! No idea what I’ll end up even drawing by then! Lol So happy you like it Jacob! 😃Don’t worry…the commentary always comes back. I can’t shut up for long. 😊
