Day 20 - #WorldWatercolorGroup Kids Art Supplies Assorted Eraser Colored Pencils Crayons Pipe Cleaners

Little Art School

I’m really rushing today and hoping to get this one in under the wire. I ran short on time today and wasn’t sure if I could pull off a post. But I figured I’d just try something fast, so for today’s art supplies prompt we have a perfectly random assortment of art supplies that I had when I was a kid. Of course, this is only a small sampling, as the coolest part about being a kid is that you can reach for absolutely anything capable of making a mark and go for it! Though I have to admit that crayons were a favorite, as were coloring books. When I was little, I couldn’t quite make the types of images I wanted to color, so it was nice to have them already compiled in a book. I loved color, so choosing the colors to fill the spaces was super fun. It didn’t matter that the drawing wasn’t mine, I was still making a selection and deciding that the cow really did need to be purple. Add in some colored pencils, a Pink Pearl eraser and of course, pipe cleaners and you really had an afternoon’s worth of artistic entertainment.

Today’s post is going to have to be woefully short as I’m rushing off to plans and typing at a mile a minute in order to create it. But it’s sort of fitting for a post about kid’s art supplies as grabbing some things and diving in to make something quickly is all part the game. There was always something else to do next, and so I was often making some marks quickly before rushing off to play with other things. It’s not that I didn’t love art, but I loved life and just wanted to live every little bit of it at once. Still do. Nothing has really changed for me, although my art supplies now include ink and watercolor. I still love the thrill of making marks, and have the childlike impatience to want to make them quickly. Hope you all have a fabulous weekend ahead doing something with the same childlike glee! I will be rushing off now, happy that I had those early lessons. It means I can now pull off a post in less than 30 minutes, so if nothing else, I guess I learned something useful way back when in those days when I was attending my little art school.

  1. I spend way too long with each of my posts and it distracts from working on the books I’m writing. I need to take a lesson on time management from you – write fast so I can go out and play.

The pipe cleaner reminded me of a kindergarten kid I taught decades ago. He’d never seen a pipe cleaner (I could write a book about parents who won’t allow their children any art supplies at all because of possible messes – ugh) and was absolutely enchanted by the two he had in his hands. I gave him a fistful and told him they were his to take home and enjoy. Such a small thing to bring huge delight to a little boy.

I let my kids do and create whatever they wanted. That sometimes meant wading for months through piles of their creations as they learned to paint, color, fold, build, and cut. Why not?

    1. Thanks, Sharon! 😃💕 Yeah… sometimes you just have to rush off an play! hehe But what wonderful story! I can’t imagine a parent not encouraging their child to play with art supplies and make messes. It’s one of the best parts of childhood, and for many of us, adulthood as well!

  2. Nice one Charlie, I still get exactly the same rush of excitement when I go into an art supplies shop, I deginyeky shouldn’t be allowed in with a credit card. I do love those crayons you’ve, they really sum up kids art for me😊

  3. super !! i needed a quick watercolor lesson for my teens this evening,, i will be using the crayons, “draw near to God and He will draw near to you” ,,cut out and tape the Watercolor “crayon” to the paper with this mentioned verse on it,, thanks !!!
