Since it’s the Year of the Monkey it seems appropriate to include this little guy next. A “monkey” isn’t necessarily a specific animal, but any of 260 versions, so there was a lot to choose from. I think chimpanzees are cute, but they’re not actually monkeys, but apes, since they don’t have a tail. I opted for this baby macaque after skimming through references that looked like everything from Einstein to Yoda. There seemed to be something quintessentially monkey about this guy so that’s where we landed today. Though the first day of the Chinese New Year was actually a week ago, and many who celebrate it are returning to work now, here’s a little monkey to usher in the year.
When I was a kid we would go to a favorite little Chinese restaurant in town. I remember how fun it was to find my animal on the little paper placemats emblazoned with the Chinese zodiac. I always wanted to be a cute little monkey, and looked again each time as though it might come up differently, but was instead continually deemed a pig, based on my irritatingly persistent birth year. An unfortunate discovery to be sure, when you’re a nerdy, chubby kid about to chow down on a giant plate of General Tso’s chicken… with a fork. Actually, in some restaurants the placemats said “Boar” but that didn’t really make things any better.
Some of you out there might be a Monkey if you were lucky enough be born in one of these years: 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004. As the Chinese placemat states: “You are very intelligent and are able to influence people. An enthusiastic achiever, you are easily discouraged and confused. Avoid Tigers.” That last bit seems rather obvious for a monkey, but there you have it. You’re welcome. Next up is “N” so if you have a suggestion of a creature starting with that letter, be sure to shout it out in the comments!

Beautiful! I love the texture and the variety of color.
Thanks Tori! I’m really glad you like it!! 😃
Sweet monkey but I bet he can get into mischief. “N” is for newt
Hehe…he looks totally mischievous…or maybe I added that in the sketch. 😊thanks Susan!! 💕😃
this is really great!!!! Your artwork inspires me
Awww I love hearing that! Thank you so much Cathy!! 💕😃
It depends on what month you’re born in, not just the year! If your birthday is Jan or Feb, you could be a different sign! Not that I believe in astrology of any sort. 🙂 Your baby macaque is sooooo adorable! <3 I want to hug both of you! 😀
I was wondering that! But that still doesn’t help me…I’m April so I’m definitely a pig! Lol Thanks Teresa! I’m glad you like my macaque!! 💕😃
Cute baby 🙂
But Charlie now you need to avoid me ? I’m a Tiger 🙁 , well a Water Tiger apparently , but still …
😀
Thanks!! 💕😃Lol…I’d never avoid you…and luckily I don’t have to because I’m the year of the pig…hehe… Doesn’t say anything about tigers and pigs so I haven’t a clue how we’re supposed to get along! Haha
Oh but of course ! Silly me , or “distracted” 🙁
I love monkeys!
Thanks for sharing!
Yay! Glad ya like him Angie! 😃😃
Another cutie, Charlie! Really enjoying your creature features. Hmm….N is for newt? nightingale? And I had to google those. Why is N hard? Maybe I’m a Nincompoop! lol <3
Thanks Laura!! 💕😃haha! You’re no Nincompoop! Lol I had to google N as well…absolutely nothing came to mind immediately. Some of these letters will be tough towards the end of the alphabet! Hehe
Cute monkey and love the commentary. Be careful, my dragon will get that monkey and your pig. Lol
Thanks Teri!! 😃Haha…you’re a dragon?!! Too cool! You win the zodiac animal wars!!
WHOOHOO! I win. Lol
Love the colors, check out my version of a similar monkey at http://www.becca-weeks.artistwebsites.com/
Thanks Becca! And very nice work on yours! 😃👍🏻
Very nice monkey! I’ve forgotten what 75 is. My brother just sent me tonnes of monkey pictures to paint. Coincidence!
Thanks Catherine! 💕😃I think you’re a rabbit! Hehe… And cool coincidence! Yay…monkeys are fun to paint! Enjoy!!
Like the colors you chose for your cute monkey, Charlie! 🎨💕👍 I looked up my Chinese sign and apparently I’m an Ox. This doesn’t feel very exciting to be this animal either. Lol! 😜 As for the letter, N – Nothing comes to mind… So I will look forward to your surprise animal! 😃💜
Thanks Jill! 💕😃Hehe…I would have pictured you a very different animal! Lol MUCH more exciting than that one and quite possibly imaginary! 😉 N is a rough one…not many options. Hehe We’ll see…
Oh, yes! Imaginary has so many more possibilities! 😜👍🎨
It does!! Much more fun!! You should do your own imaginary zodiac! 😉hehe
What an adorable fellow. Years ago I babysat a spider monkey at a friends home for a weekend. It was a fun experience. N is for Numbat.
Thanks Sharon! 💕😃 And wow…how cool is that?! That would have been a really fun experience! Hehe Oh yeah! Numbat…that’s a good one!
Good choice Charlie! And high on the cuteness scale once again.
The only “N” I can thing of is newt. They’re cute though! (K)
Thanks Kerfe! I’m glad the cute came across…hehe… It was definitely strong with this little guy. Yep… that’s the one that came to my mind first as well!
What a cute monkey!! I. Went to a lunar new year celebration at my school last Friday. One of classes have all Chinese students who are resident students. They love being here but they miss their families. I always thought my sister was born in the year of monkey but she was born in 1969. I wonder if it’s the way the calendar is kept since her birthday is in January..
Thanks Kari!! 💕😃 Actually I think that would make your sister a monkey if her birthday is in January. It was just easier to give Americans single years on placemats! Lol
I absolutely love your monkey and would love to meet him/her in person. Unfortunately I am the year of the rat so… But the year of the monkey!!
Thanks Cathe! 💕😃I’d love to meet this little guy/gal too! Hehe… And no worries rats can be cute as well depending on the kind. 😉
Cheeky monkey! And your doodlewash looks mischievous enough too 😉 Oh he’s so cute. I feel like I’m saying that every day…. that can’t be a bad thing, Charles! Love him and his little hands – as long as he’s not one of those sneaky (hilarious) pick-pocketing monkeys. I was indeed born in a Year of the Monkey, and I am most definitely easily discouraged and confused. Hahaha, ‘avoid tigers’. I’ll try my best but hey, it’s Norfolk – I can’t promise anything.
N is really troubling me. Newt? Nanny goat? Hmm!
You cheeky monkey you!! I knew it!! Lol That’s awesome Jacob! I’m sure this one picks pockets…I built in a little touch of mischief. N is rough…can we just skip it?! Lol Watch out for those tigers! 😉
Gasp – no skip!! I’m sure you can come up with something awesome!
such a cute little monkey – kinda like you…. can’t wait to see what you choose for N! I see Newt is in the lead. I’ll throw in something different…. Nurse shark 🙂
Thanks Jodi!! 😃❤️ Hold please…googling “nurse shark”……………………………….. Awww cool! I never even heard of those! I’m learning so much on this journey! Hehe
Secret…. I googled it too. 😉
A very sweet monkey – he looks a little sad, but maybe he is just planning some mischief! I agree with Sharon, go for a numbat next, they are great little animals!
My favourite monkey experience was in Bali at the Monkey forest – there was a HUGE sign saying do not feed the monkeys. Sure enough someone was ignoring it and had a monkey on his shoulder which promptly peed in copious quantities all over him. I tried not to laugh too loudly…. happy days. I’m a dragon, by the way….
Hahahaha!! That’s an awesome story!! Thanks for sharing!! I would have laughed…loudly!! Lol 😂
I’m just catching up with your blog Charlie and think that your monkey is super cute 🙂 I was also born in the Year of the Pig and was equally miffed when I found this out!
Haha! Thanks so much Tori!! Glad to know I’m not alone. Pigs rule!! 💕💕😃👍🏻
Such character you get into your paintings Charlie, it’s so alive !
Awww thanks Phil!! What a wonderful compliment! I really appreciate that! 😃
Love the color in your little monkeys fur! He is so cute! When I was little I went to Chinatown in NYC and played tick tac doe with a chicken. My dad still thinks it was the funniest thing that I thought I won, but the chicken did.
Thanks Eileen! 💕😃 and Hahaha!! That’s the best story EVER!! Too funny!! Thanks for sharing that. I needed a laugh this morning. Hehe
Ha ha, your posts bring out my childhood stories. Don’t know what it is! 🙂
