Written by Today’s prompt of minerals led me to these quickly sketched crystals, that may or may not be natural as I sort of just made them up. I’ve always found crystals to be rather fascinating. As a kid, I remember my cousin lived near train tracks and we used to walk alongside them looking for the occasional quartz crystal, or if we were really lucky a rose quartz. Quartz is actual one of the most common crystals on earth, but finding a large chunk of it felt like finding something magical. Actually, if you squeeze a quartz crystal it generates a tiny electrical current. Some say they can actually sense this energy, but others remain underwhelmed. I was sure as a kid that I could sense something, but the same was true for pretty much anything cool and unusual that I found laying about. I had quite an imagination.
Though the actual science behind things is super interesting to me, I often like to just imagine whatever I like. Those little bits of quartz found near the railroad tracks became scales of a dragon’s wing in my mind. The power they possessed was perfectly random and would change each time I encountered one. But it was fun dreaming up all the magical things they were suddenly able to do in my head. Of course, I then had to imagine those things actually happening, as the crystals, while pretty, always failed to live up to all of my plans for them. I didn’t mind. It was simply fun to explore ideas and dream up amazing scenarios. This is something I still do today when I have enough space to let my mind wander. With all the chaos that seems to come with adult life, it’s fun to just leave it all for a moment and travel to a different reality. The one that I create.
I hope that everyone has had a wonderful weekend, full of creativity and imagination. With just a couple days left of this short month of February, I for one have had so much fun seeing what everyone has painted in response to the theme and prompts this month. And I hope you’ll join me in March starting this Wednesday, as the prompts get a little bit more abstract and less literal. Should be a fun way to let our minds wander and let our imagination take over. I’ll still be painting actual things, of course, as I’m not an abstract artist, but I’m excited for the surprise of what will come next! Each day is a gift to let our minds take us to amazing places. No matter what we make, it’s always something new and incredible. A little piece of art picked up as people pass by, just like searching for quartz next to the railroad tracks. Gems that make us smile and think of how wonderful life can be, when it’s filled with magic crystals.

Lovely painting. I love the way you’ve captured the colours being reflected on the surface too. My sons used to collect quartz when we were digging in our garden in Scotland and use it to create a cairn in the part of the garden that was a sort of memorial space for their stillborn brother. Your story, therefore, conjured up some bittersweet memories for me – which is a good thing and a type of engagement I appreciate with your blog.

I love the idea that the crystals you found were a part of a dragon, problem is where was the dragon hiding? As for the powers they hold, I have no proof personally, but I have had a couple of oncology patients swear by crystal healing, one even refused all conventional treatment, chemo and radiotherapy, opting for only crystals, he was continually followed up, and they found a reduction in tumour size….problem is determining if this was the crystals, or would it have happened to him any how?? Had his body’s immune system turned back on and realised the tumour was wrong? We will never know, and I don’t know any more of the story. Have a great day 😀

Your painting of crystals is really enchanting – you’ve captured the colors that seem to appear without an earthly reason though I know it’s because of the minerals that compose each crystal. Science gets in there but there’s still room for magic and you’ve captured the essence of that as well. Always something inspiring to think about on your blog.
