Manifesto

World Watercolor Group #WorldWatercolorGroup Marble worldMy hope is that by sharing in real time as I learn watercolors, I can inspire others to join me. One thing I’ve noticed is that as various sketching groups form, there are suddenly a lot of rules you have to follow to be authentically part of that group. I believe that watercolor sketching and painting is just plain fun and that everyone who feels the urge should give it a try without worrying about rules or results. Whether you want to plein air paint, urban sketch, work from a photo at home (with a lovely glass of wine!), or create something entirely from your own imagination! It’s all a doodlewash! So I created “The Do’s & Do’s of The Doodlewash Manifesto” to get us all started.

So who’s with me? Let’s DO this!

What’s a doodlewash?

It’s whatever the heck appears on the page while watercolor sketching in whatever way you like to do it!
You made it, so smile and sign it. Now it’s a masterpiece.

dos-and-dos-of-doodlewash-manifesto

  1. DO create whatever moves you
  2. DO learn from the masters, they’re super awesome
  3. DO laugh when your work doesn’t look (AT ALL) like the masters
  4. DO create as much as you can
  5. DO focus on the peaceful enjoyment and have fun
  6. DO smile when things don’t turn out as expected
  7. DO something new everyday
  8. DO support others along the way
  9. DO try the hard stuff before you think you’re ready
  10. DO & then DO some more. Just keep doodling!

Actually, come to think of it, this is just a pretty darn good way to live your life in general. So feel free to use it for that too. Or, if you like, click here to download a copy of the Doodlewash Manifesto for yourself! Now grab a brush and let’s have some fun! Leave a reply below with a link to your work or just post it on your favorite social network with #doodlewash! Or if you need some tips to get started, just click here! I can’t wait to see your doodlewashes!

And if you’re already making some wonderful watercolor art, and want to have your work featured here, the answer is, yes, of course! Just click here to learn more!

  1. Sounds to me like you’ve got a great attitude. I hope you’ll let that philosophy help you to build momentum – the big things are to stick to it and enjoy yourself. Too many of my students unreasonably compare their work to the Masters, in which direction lies frustration and ultimately abandonment. Keep doodlin’!

    1. So true…I wrote that to constantly remind myself to stop worrying about comparisons and just DO the darn doodle. Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement! I really appreciate it!

  2. This is great. I started the Art Prescription with a similar intention. To get people excited about creating! I’ve been studying art and healing for years since getting my master’s degree in nursing. I like the playful and inviting nature of your blog!! Cheers, Beverly

    1. Checked out your blog! Love it! That’s great! We need to get the world making more art…it’s good for them! Hehe Thanks so much for your kind words. Glad you like my blog! Love linking with people who are also about inspire others to create!

    1. Love it! Thanks for dropping by Katie. Yep…trying to start a rule-free doodlewash movement. Not sure if movements by nature are allowed to be rule-free, but I hate rules as do most of my creative pals so I’m sure gonna try! 😉

  3. Yay, this is so exciting! I’m new to sharing my watercolor endeavors online, so it’s great to see that there’s such a vibrant presence and community here! Keep up the good work!
