I used masking fluid to blank the beard out initially, then when I had finished painting I removed it and put light washes for shadows in. I also used some white gouache in areas like moustache, and around edges of his beard.
great painting of Morgan Fairchild. Love the colors too. Sometime when doing beards and mustaches I use a white watercolor crayon to dip a moistened very fine brush point in and make the individual hairs this way. Very effective, especially on a portrait of a dark-skinned male. I’ll post my painting when it’s finished.
