Sandra this is amazing, how did you do the detail on the giraffe?
-
Thank you, Brenda! This is larger than most of my postcards at 5 x 7 inches, so that gave me a little more room for the detail. I started with a pen and ink sketch, which included the spots. Then I painted the entire giraffe a very light yellow-orange. When that dried, I used a darker mix of the same colors and did some shading. That dried, I…[Read more]

That’s great Sandra. I’ve been thinking of buying some gouache having seen your pictures. What make do you use?

Thank you, Gary! I actually have several brands. Winsor & Newton Designer gouache is good but expensive. I received some Arteza for Christmas. They’re priced well but only come in sets. They do seem to have the widest range of colors at the moment. Schmincke has a reputation as the best, but it’s hard to find and is highly priced here in the…[Read more]

That’s amazing, Sandra. So much detail.
-
Thank you, Gary! I do this kind of drawing underneath most of my traditional watercolors though most of it gets covered up. It helps me establish my values.
-
It’s great to see that sometimes. I like to see Charlie’s drawings when he posts on Instagram.
-
I used to do a series of tutorials called pencil to paint, where I showed my steps and explained my choices. They took quite a bit of time so haven’t done one in a long time, but I found as with most things, that when I tried to teach others, I ended up learning myself. One of these days, I’ll start them up again.

Love the eyes, I am still a bit leary trying white🙃
-
Thank you! In this case, I left the white of the paper because I was using traditional watercolor. I also did some color lifting along the edges to get that fluffy puffball look that kittens have.

Great technique, he does look fluffy, cute!

Beautiful, Sandra. Our cats only seem to be active between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. 🙂

Thank you, Mary! Cats are crepuscular so they like the night-time. I say this mainly because it’s a rare occasion when I get to use the word crepuscular!
-
-
Lovely

Many thanks, Manoj!

That’s brilliant, Sandra. I see what you mean about softening the edges.

Thank you, Gary! I use the color-lifting a lot for fur. It depends on what paper I’m using because it works better on some than on others.

Great picture, Sandra. We’re very careful about what we put in. If we’re not sure if its recyclable we throw it in the rubbish bin.
-
Thank you, Gary! It’s sad that it isn’t easier to tell. So many things get thrown away that could be recycled just because we can’t be sure.
-
-
Sad to know. We spend a lot of time separating the items for future use and it comes to this. Nice job on the painting.
-
Thank you, Everett! It is sad and makes you wonder how much actually gets recycled and how much the whole thing is just to make people think we’re doing something.
