I skipped the butterflies and went straight to the wild animals. There are four species of giraffe, the Northern, the Southern, the Masai and the Reticulated. Giraffes give birth standing up, so poor baby can have up to a five-foot fall when they are born! Baby Giraffe-Zensations Zebra Pen & Watercolor on Hahnemühle Cezanne 140 HP

This is so wonderful!!!Love the way he is coming up through the water. Is the texture from the lid or is it a magical technique? It is beautiful!!!
-
Thank you, Mary! I covered the lid with Daniel Smith Watercolor ground and the texture comes from that. I don’t know if you saw the other tin I did -https://doodlewash.com/forums/topic/diy-travel-palettes/page/17/#post-131854 I go into the whole conversion to travel palette thing.

Thanks, Sandra. I did see the other post but don’t remember the texture. Turtles are a big thing here on the West Coast of Florida. We have a very active group keeping an eye on our nesting turtles and it’s always a joyous moment when they hatch and find their way back to the Gulf.

I can imagine how thrilling it would be, watching them.

Such a dreamy scene! Beautifully painted, Peggy!

Thank you. Very often when I start out painting what I anticipate will be a realistic landscape, the painting takes over and takes me on its own journey to a place I hadn’t anticipated at all, imparting a dreamy and, sometimes, surrealistic quality. When I find myself in that space, I just paint really slowly and let it happen. This one took…[Read more]

Love this unusual perspective! Great job.

Thank you. The painting was a first anniversary present for friends. I was inspired by a photo I once saw of them on a Paris balcony which is where they first committed to each other. That photo of them gave me the sense that all of Paris was at their feet – and this is what I was going for with that choice of perspective.

I am beginning to recognize your artwork now, as soon as I saw this I was like, that must be one of Paula’s! You have such beautiful architecture to draw from!
-
Thanks Sandee! Oh, I wish this was local. Most of the architecture in my paintings is only loosely based in reality.
-
LOL, well, that makes me feel better, I was quite jealous!
-
Yes, I get jealous of all those folks who live amongst genuinely historic architecture. My choices are Mock Tudor, Faux Chateau and Vaguely Mediterranean, but a little imagination and a lot vacation photos do the trick.

thank you. I was on a chicken/rooster kick for awhile. I loved doing the feathers.
-
-
That is one fantastic looking chicken! I’ve wanted to paint a chicken for ages but am a little nervous to try, I usually do fruit and veg, they stand so still! ;o)
-
well, in return, I envy your fruits and vegetables. Chickens are fun to paint from a photo where they stand still and keep quiet.
-
LOL!

Great work, Kaye. Just an idea that crossed my mind, while watching your rooster: make even stronger contrast between the rooster’s white feathers and the background. And make it large! It’s beautiful 🙂

Thanks for your suggestions. It is a large painting and it’ sold and delivered a few years ago, , but I happen to be working on another at this time

That is one awesome giraffe.
Thank you, Mary!
Great painting Sandra! Which of the species is yours?
Thank you, Julia! It wasn’t identified, but probably a Reticulated.
Thank you, Susan! Now that they can do DNA testing, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of identifying the species and sub-species. I was kind of unhappy that the Rothschild giraffe is now considered part of the Nubians. Sort of like when they decided that Pluto is no longer a planet, and that the Brontosaurus was an Apatosaurus (although, I…[Read more]
I love all giraffes and yours is very well done. I love his expression.
Thank you, Sharon! I was very proud of myself with this one because I kept it loose and didn’t fuss! The Hahnemuhle Cezanne Hotpress helped with that, I think.
I have a pack of their hot press but haven’t tried it. In what way did the paper make it easier to stay loose?
You get such a nice even flow. I think my Aquanaut brushes helped, too. I like the way they release the paint, especially on the Cezanne HP. I felt I was getting the values I wanted right off with having to glaze or remove as much to get there.
What a beautiful rendering of a beautiful animal.
Thank you, Joan!
I love your 20 minute sketch of the giraffe. It’s just perfect!
Thank you, Kathy!
This is absolutely charming. Your animal paintings are delightful.
