Use a dropper or waterbrush so you can add a controlled amount of water. First get a black value chart or make one. Then for each color start with full strength, add a drop or two of water for each step on the chart, trying to get it at about the same strength as the step on the black value chart. It helps you start associating the tints of the color with values. I need to do this again myself. If you always work with the same colors it is easy to recognize their values, but as you work with more it’s easy to lose track of them.

      • Sandra, thank you so much for your detailed response. I will try to do this. Right now I find that I’m switching up colours all the time. I might try to work with one palette for a while and do the value charts for it. I tend to work in a more instinctive way by slapping colour on the paper. Perhaps a little planning might help. 😄

        • I’m the same way. I like trying different colors, and I tend to just jump in. I have to rein myself in every once in a while, when I’m frustrated and make myself do charts so that I start remembering what I already know, lol.
