I love toned papers and always have a toned sketchbook in my oil painting backpack. I use them to do thumbnails before painting because white charcoal on toned paper gives me a perfect map of the brightest brights in the scene and the paper is the instant mid-tone.

This was the study for an oil painting, but I much preferred the watercolor. It’s hard to tell what my art critic cat thinks about it – what does sitting on it mean? Thank goodness he didn’t sit on the oil painting! IMG_7358IMG_7360

I seem to be obsessed with bridges lately. There is something soothing about the soaring shapes. I went to paint the Air Force boats, but ended up sketching the bridge as well. IMG_7361IMG_7367

You did an amazing job of getting depth in your painting. Love it.

Spectacular. You take photorealism to a new level. I had to check if it was the photo reference.

Another little urban watercolor sketch in our town park of the water lily pond overlooking the bay. I’ve done this same scene in oil and like the ability to blend the water reflections better, but I love the layering with watercolors. And I got a chance to use my new Quin Violet and Hooker’s Green Deep! 🙂 IMG_7256

A simple sketch of sinking boats. I’ve been meaning to paint this in oil, but it’s been too hot out, so just a quick sketch right now. I’m trying to exercise my daily art muscles, getting ready for the daily painting from life challenge I participate in each September. 2018-08-23 10.23.04

I lead a weekly plein air group and today we painted under a bridge along a bay. For something different, I used watercolors instead of my normal oil painting. Less equipment, much faster results. Love the perspective of feeling is if I am standing, or perhaps floating in the river, below the bridge.

perhaps. Sometimes what your familiar with, interferes in seeing what you are not familiar with. It is a lovely painting with a fresh perspective.

Beautifully done, Cheryl! Yeah, the outdoor wash is a problem with watercolors. But at least they’re super portable! 😉 hehe
