Day 55: Last weekend, my husband and I headed down to visit the Merlion and do some sketching and videos in commemoration of the Singapore National Day which is today (Aug 9). I think every nation has its own icon that embodies the richness of its history. For Singapore, the lasting icon is the Merlion which has the body of a fish and the head of a lion. The fish not only symbolises the origin of the nation as a fishing village but also signifies the values of its people such as hard working, frugal, sensible, etc. The lion stands for courage and it reflects Singapore’s original name (Singapura) which means “lion city”.
The Merlion overlooks some of the famous architecture like the Marina Bay Sands, ArtScience Museum. Those not only inspiringly reflect the values that the Merlion represents but also show how far the nation of Singapore has become.
