A little play on words with the prompt, "picnic food." I am a big fan of picnics, which means I think we should protect our natural world. WW Month 19_Day 3

The Colorado sun has been hiding behind gray clouds in some unusual weather patterns this year. I tried to represent the sun on the leaves to celebrate a beautiful day on the patio! WW19_Day2

Hello World Watercolor Month fans! I look forward to seeing your paintings and sharing mine this July. I took some creative liberty with the Day 1 prompt. Enjoy! WW19_Day1

Not a very exotic location-- on my patio. There were no clouds in the blue Colorado sky, no rainy days. Too colorful for monochromatic... So I was "prompted" to try to improve perspective, and get some sense of sunlight and shadow. #WorldWatercolorMonth IMG_1291exotic

I haven't tried a lot of urban sketching...but for the city life prompt I pulled out a picture from London. My B & B was on Gower Street in Bloomsbury. While there, I read a book about Virginia Woolf's years in that very same neighborhood. “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” ― Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own #WorldWaterColorMonthIMG_1281

Time is running out! Nature hike, with wet and dry techniques, and shadows! I used colored pencils and Conte crayons plus watercolor. #WorldWatercolorMonth IMG_1279

In February we went to Kauai, and I painted postcards of the ocean. In Colorado, we have lakes, streams, and rivers-- not the beach exactly! Here I am playing with a very cool refillable Japanese brush pen from JetPens. #WorldWatercolorMonth IMG_126020180225_132848_Burst01

#WorldWatercolorMonth Everything was in bloom at the Denver Botanic Gardens! I sat by the beautiful lily pond to paint. 20180714164217_IMG_1229

I tried the fast and loose approach in a beautiful scene on Lake Granby, in the Rock Mountains! SO dry in the mountains, its hard to do wet on wet. The wet is dry before you can do the next step! But no complaints...happy to be here. 20180714164319_IMG_1230

Since I live near the Rocky Mountains, I had a head start on this prompt! The first is a painting of the foothills we call the Flatirons. The second is from Caribou Ranch, where wildflowers were abundant. #WorldWatercolorMonth IMG_1221IMG_1219

I like to play board games when the family comes for a visit, and clue is a favorite. Thought I'd play on the classic question, and there is a little tongue-in-cheek in this postcard painting since I have a houseful of books, a library not unlike this one, and I love candlelight. IMG_1214

Here are my shades of blue. Not to be too political 😉 but this is a blue wave that includes diverse intensities of blue. #WorldWaterColorMonth IMG_1153

For the "Family Moments" prompt, I tried to paint glasses that were my mother's and aunt's wedding stemware. With 4 rambunctious kids in a fairly small house, the fact that they survived is a testament to my mother's fondness for them. I can't remember her ever using them, however, I do bring them out for special occasions. They help me remember her and her era, when you might only own a few really lovely things and so you make every effort to protect them. #WorldWatercolorMonth Family glassware

Today, thinking about primary colors, I discovered the red teapot and blue and yellow placemat...then added a blue mug and lemon. Another family watercolor time to relax together. When they go home, what will I do?? Any Doodlewashers in Boulder? #WorldWatercolorMonthIMG_1136IMG_1137

A sunny day in Boulder, Colorado was a great way to respond to the first day's challenge! I set up a new palette, based on recommendations from The Colors of the West, by Molly Hashimoto (See http://www.mollyhashimoto.com/molly_hashimoto/books) Then I used it to paint in some sketches I made a few days ago. As a beginner (returning to watercolor after many years away) I look forward to learning from the community this month! 20180701_182110
