Interesting that Angela\'s first exercise is a Circle Excercise, where she reminds us these are circles not flowers yet...thanks literal subconscious mind for producing an under painting of flowers (picture 2). Picture 3 is from Lessons 3 and 4 where one makes decisions for the details, maybe use a reference photo (I used Claire Waite Brown\'s \"the watercolor flower artist\'s bible\" for inspiration. I feel like my paintings dry appearing overworked, which painting 1 is probably the case. But in picture 2 was glazed and had details added in for picture 3. I followed Angela\'s suggestion of one stroke, thin then do it and be done. What are the causes for an artwork to appear overworked? Our dog before Popcorn was a black and white shitzu/maltese. He had a black mask so you could barely see his eyes so we named him “Bandit.” Sandra Strait painted his portrait years ago for me and did a wonderful job. I think you gave your dog a nice ,newly groomed look. I know I would love to meet him.

Thank you Pamitha. Yes, she is a cutie.

Shells – A bit late, but the technique took even more time than I expected. Sandra, the shells really look like they’re on the bottom of the sea! Is the sandy texture from the paper surface that you used?
-
Thank you, Kathy! Yes, the William Turner paper has great texture. I also used Lunar Blue (which I forgot when I listed the colors) and it is highly granulating.

That is one awesome giraffe.

Thank you, Mary!

Great painting Sandra! Which of the species is yours?
-
Thank you, Julia! It wasn’t identified, but probably a Reticulated.
-
-
Thank you, Susan! Now that they can do DNA testing, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of identifying the species and sub-species. I was kind of unhappy that the Rothschild giraffe is now considered part of the Nubians. Sort of like when they decided that Pluto is no longer a planet, and that the Brontosaurus was an Apatosaurus (although, I…[Read more]

I love all giraffes and yours is very well done. I love his expression.

Thank you, Sharon! I was very proud of myself with this one because I kept it loose and didn’t fuss! The Hahnemuhle Cezanne Hotpress helped with that, I think.
-
I have a pack of their hot press but haven’t tried it. In what way did the paper make it easier to stay loose?
-
You get such a nice even flow. I think my Aquanaut brushes helped, too. I like the way they release the paint, especially on the Cezanne HP. I felt I was getting the values I wanted right off with having to glaze or remove as much to get there.

What a beautiful rendering of a beautiful animal.

Thank you, Joan!

Lots of masking fluid to start with, lol. It’s too bad you aren’t close enough to take Kathy Delumpa Allegri’s art classes. She makes it simple.

There are times when the site-feed is full, because lots of people are commenting or joining up, or whatever, and it can be difficult to find the new art that is posted or what you are looking for. It just dawned on me that some people may not know there is an easy short-cut to filter what you see. It can still be hard to find things like c…[Read more]
