Hi All, I’ve been doing some different media and just a few watercolor sketches lately. I finished this yesterday. “Wolffie, Providence Court Location” Saunders Waterford cp paper about 6×6″ using Daniel Smith paints. IMG_4243

This is from a photo a friend took recently in Cape May, NJ. I feel I succeeded in a few things, not so much in others. I wanted to try to capture the pretty pink that was in the sky and the sparkle on the wet part of the sand. This is in a 5×8″ Hahnemuhle watercolor book, DaVinci paints, and a little white colored pencil to enhance the little…[Read more]

Thanks Sandra. Grisaille was harder with watercolor than I thought it would be (I’ve done it with colored pencil, which seems more straightforward). I used the warm grays on the left, and cool grays on the right. I got waaay too dark in the shadow on the left and when I saw that I just did the shadow on the right with watercolors. I plan to…[Read more]

I use a technical pen and hatching and squirkling for grisaille on my postcard animals. You get the gray undertone values, but it is easier to keep them from competing with your watercolors.

I was inspired when I rewatched Jaws the other night. I loved the stillness of the water and the moonlight in the opening scene. This is in a 5×8 Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook, with Daniel Smith Kyanite Genuine (birthday present Yay!), Sennelier Prussian Blue, and gold ochre JazperStardust paints. In real life the twinkles in the Kyanite…[Read more]

#Worldwatercolormonth 7/31/18 “childhood memories” I’m not particularly pleased with this painting, but my favorite childhood memories are playing with my toy horses (until I got a real one!). I’m glad I saved them because they are great fun to pull out of the box and paint now and again. My all time favorite is the really cheap plastic one…[Read more]

I\'m glad I saved them because they are great fun to pull out of the box and paint now and again. My all time favorite is the really cheap plastic one on the left, I think I liked his attitude. DaVinci paints on a surprisingly pleasant to work on Somerset Velvet paper. I also practiced grisaille using FC Pitt gray scale brush pens (India Ink) which I wouldn\'t use in this combo again, they didn\'t quite give me the range or flexibility I would have liked. IMG_2244-
Getting grays that work with your color isn’t easy with grisaille. You’ve done a nice job here though.

Yes it is, and it’s even more fun cleaning and refilling their water tub several times a day when they decide to put a leg in, splash water all over the ground, and then roll in the ensuing mud. Hey if you ever want a ref photo of a pony doing something, I’ve got tons to share!

#WorldWatercolorMonth 7/28/18 When I saw the prompt “splashing around” I knew exactly what I wanted to paint. These are 2 of my ponies playing in their water tub. They sometimes dunk their entire head in! I used JazperStardust handmade paints in a 5×8″ Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchbook. My own ref photo. IMG_3818
