Totally perfect teenage tree, I have seen that look on my kiddos eyes when they were teenagers. Now they are raising teenagers. Life is good and so are my teenage grandchildren. Very good job.
-
Thank you, Brenda! I was hoping this would resonate with everyone who’s dealt with teen-agers. Especially those of us who used to be one, lol.
-
-
Oh my gosh again – Sandra that is delightful. What an awesome awesome sapling and yes … lol … just like a teenager :). Thank you so much for sharing what you used … lol I don’t even know what a technical pen is. I’ll have to look it up .. lol.
-
Thank you, Zoie! There are lots of different kinds of technical pen. Generally, it means it has a rigid, straight nib with a slightly rounded end. They can be made of metal, plastic or fiber. The ones I use most often are fiber-tipped in .08, .05, .03, and .01 sizes. I use the Zebra pen brand, but other good ones of this kind include Pigma…[Read more]

Thank you so much Sandra 😊. Can you tell me when gouache is used?
-
Gouache is a watercolor but formulated to be opaque and has a flatter, more velvety appearance (though many brands of gouache these days have more shine). You can use them for washes like traditional watercolor, but they are more commonly used like acrylic – just enough water to give them a consistency of heavy cream. You can paint light colors…[Read more]

Sandra this is amazing, how did you do the detail on the giraffe?

Thank you, Brenda! This is larger than most of my postcards at 5 x 7 inches, so that gave me a little more room for the detail. I started with a pen and ink sketch, which included the spots. Then I painted the entire giraffe a very light yellow-orange. When that dried, I used a darker mix of the same colors and did some shading. That dried, I…[Read more]

Thank you, Gary! I do this kind of drawing underneath most of my traditional watercolors though most of it gets covered up. It helps me establish my values.

It’s great to see that sometimes. I like to see Charlie’s drawings when he posts on Instagram.

I used to do a series of tutorials called pencil to paint, where I showed my steps and explained my choices. They took quite a bit of time so haven’t done one in a long time, but I found as with most things, that when I tried to teach others, I ended up learning myself. One of these days, I’ll start them up again.
