Happy Mother’s Day!
We had an unusual late April snowstorm this year in Oregon. One of my friends had been watching a hummingbird’s nest in her yard with two babies. Snow covered the area, and tree limbs were crashing around. Judy’s husband put up some foam board to help protect the babies, but of coursel, it was their Momma that these babies depended on. They survived and are now flying about the garden.
My own Mom passed away almost three years ago, but well I remember all the times she came to my rescue, and kept me warm and healthy when the world seemed stormy.
Did you know that female hummingbirds spend about a week building their nests, using a spider web base to attach it to a branch, insulating it with soft plants, and camouflaging it with lichens?

That’s a beautiful painting, Sandra.
Thank you, Gary! How are you doing?
I’m ok thank you Sandra. I have a few tears occasionally. I still can’t believe it happened.
My heart goes out to you, and you are in my prayers.
Thank you Sandra.
Beautiful
Many thanks, Brenda!
This is so beautiful, Sandra!!! When we lived in NY we had so many hummingbirds in the summer…probably had something to do with living on the edge of the woods. I’ve seen exactly one hummingbird in our yard since moving to FL 25 years ago. Some things about NY I really miss.
My brother seems to have quite a few hummingbirds at his place. Probably because he’s still surrounded by orange groves, though most are abandoned.
Beautiful, and what a great subject. Thanks to your husband for trying to protect the babies. We once had a hummer nest in our front yard in a N.Z. tea tree that was fairly low and I could watch the goings on from the house. The nest was exactly as you described with lichens all over it. When the birds fledged and were barely on their own, I watched the mother bird return and completely destroy the nest. I guess that’s the avian version of moving and leaving no forwarding address!
Thank you, Sally! I wish the birds that nest on our front porch would get rid of their nest when they aren’t using it. But saves them quite a bit of work because they just have to spruce it up a bit to use again the next year.
This is amazing!! And a lovely write-up that made me miss my mother.. Much love to you..<3
Thank you, Varsha, and love to you as well!
Beautiful, I love the colours.
Thank you, Victoria!
