You all know that I am a firm believer that Watercolor Paper is the most important material when you want to have a good experience with watercolors. Arches is one of my favorites, but basically anyone that is 100% cotton base is good for watercolor. Recently I found in Amazon a very interesting journal made with Strathmore 500 140lb 100% cotton paper, and just for $15.99 (taxes included)…. So I purchased and try it…. Its wonderful….. and here is a paint I did in the journal…. Its a very good journal and takes very little space…. this one is a 5″ x 8″.
Excellent painting! I have had 100% cotton paper with bad sizing that was terrible, and cellulose with good sizing that worked well for me. A lot depends on your style though. For certain effects, cotton is the only way to go.
And thank you for the tip! I’ve been struggling with paper lately, and have decided to invest in some better ones of various types to experiment a bit. On there up-side, at least I’ve gotten practiced enough that I’m able to notice when the paper is the problem 🙂
Paper is the most important. When I confront a student paint that doesn’t want to work, I just put glicerin and a touch of honey and then the paint start to react much better. But paper is nothing we can do to improve it….
