Written by I’m not a fan of crowded places, so although I have some physical stores I like to visit, I prefer to do most of my serious shopping on Amazon.com. Though it does lack the immediate gratification aspect of in-store shopping, the speed at which things arrive is more than acceptable. Also, when a little box with a smile on the side arrives a couple of days later, it’s like opening a present! And in some cases, I have no idea which shipment came first, so it’s actually a complete surprise to see what’s inside. Beyond that, there’s a seemingly infinite range of products just a click away, so really, what’s not to love about that!
Once, when I bought a present for Philippe, I checked the box to have Amazon gift wrap it, since I was running notoriously behind and it would arrive at precisely the moment I was due to give it to him. The doorbell rang early that morning and I made him stay upstairs while I snuck down to check. A giant box was sitting there and so I lugged it inside and ripped it open, expecting to see a beautifully wrapped box inside that package. Instead, there was simply a gigantic blue velour bag, cinched at the top with a large gold ribbon. It looked impossibly ridiculous, like the lost bag of an improbable Jewish Santa Claus. I giggled all the way upstairs and told Philippe that his gift had arrived… and it’s amazing.
I do love the idea of coming home with something immediately, and will sometimes grab a tube of paint at the art supply store to satisfy the urge. However, after many disappointing trips to find that particular color out of stock, I turned to Amazon again. I was indeed surprised that the tiny tube of paint arrived floating around in its ver own large box, but that was my fault for not simply ordering something more off my burgeoning wish list. I keep my wish list updated at all times, for nobody in particular as Philippe doesn’t ever read it. But it’s nice to create a virtual collection of things you’d love to have. Just a click away, coming to you one day, in that overly large signature box with a smile on it.

I have to admit I love Amazon as well, for us being rural, it is simply divine to shop online and sit back and it comes to your house, you can’t beat that! We even had a neighbor that bought baby chicks through Amazon, now that is amazing! So, yes, I am a fan. 🙂

Me, too! It’s always fun to get a box because I don’t have a clue to what it is! I shop and forget whether I got it or not and it comes in weeks later, sometimes, and I’ll remember after I open it but it’s so cool to have a surprise!! I have only ever shopped on line once and that was to purchase my worldwatercolormonth swag. Hehe… Since it proved to be far to easy I have avoided it since. Too much fun could get me into trouble. 🙂

Amazon is my fave too – they would love your doodlewash of their box! 🙂 And my Charlie loves Amazon best too, because the USPS or UPS or Amazon delivery folks all bring him treats when they deliver 🙂

I do love a nice spot of online shopping – I mean, anything to minimise interaction 😉 – but do restrain myself pretty well. After all, it can have perils of its own, besides the sheer choice; I did once get into a pickle wherein I had accidentally activated ‘one-click ordering’ or something or other, and unwittingly ordered about ten board games. Whoops! 😉
As it happens I was only on Amazon a couple of hours ago, eyeing up Archer DVDs… I wonder whose fault that is.

Stores and on line purchasing both have a place. Only the most ordinary art supplies are available in retail stores, and nearly everything has to be ordered on line. Years ago, I could shop at a huge art store and look at new products and try all kinds of interesting things. Now that wonderful big store is gone because, guess why – all the on-line products made it easy for so many people. I miss real stores.
I dislike worrying about buying products that might have to be returned, and what a pain that might be for items going back through some kind of delivery system. Things that don’t fit or just don’t look good on me, or the color isn’t what it appeared to be in photos. Right now I have set of cotton napkins I have to return because they’re the wrong color, but it will just be a quick drive to the store to return them and get my money back.
But I can see that for people who are really pressed for time, who don’t like the parking and the crowds, who have to lug around young children, who have difficulty walking or live in a cabin at the far edge of a field in East Kanipitchuck, or who know exactly what they want (I never do – LOL) the arrival of that happy box from Amazon is a perfect solution.
Your Doodlewash box is a wonderful gift to all of us, even empty.

I remember going from store to store looking for a specific thing and not finding it…I so appreciate Amazon. Now that getting around is a bit harder, it is all good. BTW- I have put a note with each order to send in “appropriate packaging, to save resources.

I smiled when I saw your painting and knew where you were going I’m an Amazon fan also. Love shopping there and paying no postage. And I have an Amazon credit card which makes some of my purchases cost even less.

Hi Charlie: Isn’t Amazon Prime the best? It certainly makes shopping easier – as the one who is in charge of Christmas in our household, a few years ago I had my grown children and hubby make Amazon wish lists and it surely took a lot of stress out of the gift-giving occasions. I also made one and keep it updated for Mother’s Day and my birthday, just in case ;). I don’t miss the actual holiday shopping in the physical store one bit! We get at least one Amazon shipment here per week whether it is mine, my daughter’s, or my hubby’s. I enjoy the smiling box as well 🙂

So simple and so direct to the point, shopping in 2016 although not for me. I like shopping in real shops and feel how things feel in my hand and that you cannot by Amazone, maybe in the future who knows.
