When it comes to my favorite restaurant, I have to say that a little place called Novel here is Kansas City is definitely my favorite. In 2014, it was listed by Bon Appétit as one of the top 50 new restaurants in America, which was the same year that Philippe and I discovered it and listed it as our favorite as well. It’s located on a hilltop in an old Victorian-era house, which has been remodeled and expanded to give it a more updated feel. I didn’t sketch the restaurant itself because I had very little time tonight to paint, so here’s a super fast doodlewash of a dish they served at one point instead. The food there is referred to as New American Cuisine which is a term for places that don’t quite fit any disernable ethic or dietary category. In a word, novel.

We actually haven’t been back in months as we don’t often go out to dinner. Instead, we’ve taken to doing a Saturday lunch instead as our treat. Dinners are wonderful spent at home so it’s really hard to justify the cost of going out unless it’s a special occasion. Our Saturday lunch spot is in the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. A lovely place with a glass ceiling that makes lets you feel like you’re eating outdoors even in the cruel heat of a Kansas City summer. We don’t go on Sunday, however, because they only serve brunch. This is a concept that makes no sense to us since we actually eat breakfast every day. Having breakfast food for dinner is super fun because it’s a concept you did on purpose, but having it for lunch just means you did too much the night before and forgot to wake up in time for breakfast.

But in the end, food is simply a wonderful thing no matter the time of day. My quickly sketched doodlewash is a side effect of wanting to jump ahead to a wonderfully relaxing evening of food and wine. I hope that each of you are enjoying a beautiful Friday evening doing only the things that bring you the most happiness. Cheers and bon appétit!

  1. Another scrummy doodlewash dinner! And extra wows for yet more shine in the cutlery. Brunch is a great word I think – there have been times where ‘brinner’ would be appropriate! – but does the thing come before or after elevenses? It is a quandary.

Bon appetit back atcha, enjoy your Saturday lunch!

    1. Thanks, Jacob! 😃 Lol Now Brinner is just crazy!! That’s really sleeping in! I really just hate brunch when restaurants remove all actual lunch items from the menu. As much as I love waffles, I don’t want them twice in the same day. Hope you have a fabulous Saturday!!

  2. Wonderful sketch. I have to say I’ve never stopped to eat in Kansas City, it’s hard enough just driving through it. But it does remind me of meeting you the year we drove through in high winds and I posted my sketch of KC and you commented. That was the best thing about KC.
