After yesterday’s healthy snack it’s time to get decadent again with some caramel. Today is the day you get to add a little fire to that sugar and if you’re feeling saucy, a little milk or cream and make some magic. I personally love caramel sauce poured over vanilla ice cream so that’s what I decided to doodlewash. I’m also a fan of an apple covered in caramel goodness, but that feels more like fall than spring, so you get a sundae instead. You’ll have to add nuts yourself, as I prefer these without anything bumpy or crunchy to screw up the texture.

In 1886, Milton Hershey started up his first successful confectionery business, producing not chocolate, but caramel candies. The Lancaster Caramel Company shipped caramels across the U.S. and to Europe, helping to make the caramel candy popular. In fact, the first chocolate Hershey produced was as a coating for caramel candies before finally creating the iconic Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar. Which honestly, tastes like crap and though the way they make it is a secret, speculators think this is because the milk is intentionally soured to promote a ridiculously long shelf life.

Though caramel sauce is delicious, people have been using just caramelized sugar and water to make candies for centuries now. The color of caramel is based on the length of time it’s heated, taking on a deeper color at higher temperatures. When it gets too high, though, the flavor darkens as well and quickly becomes unpalatable. And that’s about all I know about caramel, but that’s probably enough. It’s really better just to eat the delicious stuff and not ask too many questions.

  1. Dang it Charlie…LOL! 😉 I have a terrible sweet tooth, and this sweet looks very toothy. After these, I may need a Doodlewash diet series ;). Great job on painting the ice cream and the glass! It looks amazing!

  2. ‘don’t ask too many questions’ !! So Funny Charlie!!
What a wonderful way with the caramel delight, and the glass was especially great job!!
yummy chewy Caramels were always a fav growing up 🙂

    1. Thanks Debi! 😃💕 hehe… so happy you liked this one. I don’t know why I love painting glass and shiny things so much because it’s ridiculously hard! lol But I do! And yum… I used ot love caramels best growing up too! Well… I sort of loved all candy really. I was a chubby kid. 😊

      1. Charlie you do glass so brilliantly! really. Growing up, we were all fed those kinds of Treats- maple bars, candied apples, cotton candy for pete’s sake!! then there was always Grandma’s cooking pies and cookies. no wonder we were all ‘fluffy!

  3. Yay for caramel! I didn’t like ice cream (have I mentioned this before? I probably have… if not, I expect this is yet another thing that will garner only looks of disappointment/horror) until I saw this, Charlie. Wow-eee!! Looks as if there’s a bit of a scramble going on above me, so you might have to make a couple more of these. 😉 After all those animals, your foods are back with a bang!

    1. Hold please… I’m getting over the horror and shock of you not liking what is probably the greatest thing of all time! I hope this has changed your mind and while you’re watching all those movies you’ve never seen, you’ll be eating a caramel ice cream sundae! 😉Hehe… Thanks Jacob!! I love sketching food, so it was good to get back to it after all this time. Glad you think I still “got it” when it comes to food sketches!

      1. Hahaha, I figured this would be the way. Sorry, Charlie! At least I’ve said that to you today 😉 It’s the usual response; I’ve only ever met a couple of people who share my view (well, that I know of – I don’t ask everyone). I’m told I just haven’t tried the right ice cream – perhaps they’re right, but I shan’t rush to prove them so. 😉

Of course you still have it!!

    1. Awww thanks Kerfe! Glad you liked the glass… it’s always super hard to pull off. And YAY!!! I remember Woolworths! Maybe that’s why I love these type of glasses. Anything else seems wrong for serving these. Though I used to always favor a root beer float.

  4. Yummy!! I love caramel! By the way, do you pronounce it ca-Ra-Mel or car-mol? I have tried to make caramel and you’re right, the longer you cook it, the darker it gets.. I’m totally in love with anything salted Carmel these day.. And your sundae looks perfect! No nuts for me either!

    1. Thanks Kari!😃💕 I pronounce it ca-R1-Mel, but I imagine I called it car-mol growing up as that sounds more like how my family would have said it. hehe And yeah… I love that salted caramel has become a big “thing” these days. I trend I can happily approve of! 😉

  5. I’ve only made caramel for creme caramel before (so it’s not really true caramel…just a sugary base for a flan). I’m glad I didn’t see this before I went to bed or I would have had trouble falling asleep lusting after that luscious dessert! 😀 <3

    1. Thanks Teresa! 😃💕 You’re a step ahead of me then… I can only make ice cream. And glad you saw this late and I didn’t send you to bed all lusty and unsatisfied… wait… that sounds absolutely horrible. For a number of reasons. Let’s just say, glad you liked my doodlewash! 😊Thanks friend!

    1. Haha… sorry sis… I didn’t mean to taunt you with ice cream so early in the morning! Glad you liked this one! 😃💕And seriously… as hard as you have to work during this time of year, you have EARNED the dessert of your choice (and likely anything else you want)! Go for it! 💜

  6. It’s 4:30 in the morning, I can’t sleep, and now I want a caramel covered ice cream sundae.
Wait, I’m going to try to lick the computer screen.
Nah, didn’t work. What time does the ice cream store open? I could get there early and wait.
    Thanks, Charlie.
