Today we celebrate the high five, that extra special simple gesture of raising your hands to slap palms with any other creature who’s willing, so I chose this little cat. Feel free to celebrate however you wish. Also, feel free to use whichever words you’d like to proceed this classic move such as “hit me,” “slip me five,””gimme some,” or “slap me some skin.” Though, in my case, I’m not sure the cat would care. As is always the case with these days, it’s best not to overthink it and simply high five everyone you meet (bonus points for surprising complete strangers).

National High Five Day was started in 2002 at the University of Virginia. A group of students set up shop on the main quad and gave out high fives and lemonade. In 2010, the founders of National High Five Day decided to transform all that positive palm slapping into something that could do the world real and tangible good. Each year, they raise money for a different charity and this year’s charity is CoachArt, a wonderful program that offers free art and athletic lessons to chronically ill children and their siblings.

The origin of the high five is hotly contested, with Magic Johnson claiming he invented it while at Michigan State in the late 70’s and others saying it was happening long before that on the women’s volleyball circuit during the 60’s. We may never know for sure, but we do know that it didn’t make it into the dictionary until 1980 and became a verb the following year. However it came to be, it’s a real thing now and this little kitty would like to celebrate this day with you. “Gimme Five! Meow!”

  1. This little character has the most captivating eyes I think I’ve ever seen! Wonderful. My cats do that when they want to be stroked, or when I’m eating something they like the look of themselves. Or maybe they are high-fiving? Oscar used to do it on command, but at eighteen he’s too old these days and I think afraid he might lose balance.

What a peculiar celebration – I like the sound of lemonade, though – and hilarious that there was a kerfuffle over who ‘coined’ it. A high-five to you from across the pond for another stellar post, Charles!

    1. Thanks Jacob! Glad ya liked the eyes… I was just hoping I wouldn’t screw that up as that’s the best part. Hehe Awww… I’m sure Oscar is still high-fiving in his heart. 💕 But yeah… it’s a funny day to celebrate. I didn’t really get out yesterday much so I wasn’t a very good high fiver! lol

      1. Shame on you – thank goodness I stepped in to save the day! 😉 I can probably get away with not partaking; maybe I’m just not in the right circles, but I think high fives are generally one of those things us Brits like to look down on, tut at and go ‘how American’. This is of course while we shove ferrets down our trousers.

  2. I’d high-five (and hug) your sweet little doodlewashed kitty any day! <3 🙂 I'm glad some good is being done with this particular national day and it's not just a goofy "celebration" like April Fools, for example. 😀

  3. ROFL! I nearly spit out my Hershey’s Kiss when I was reading through all ways we say High Five and got to “slip me some skin” I haven’t heard that in eons! Funny! Your kitty is adorable!!!

    Thanks for the laugh and here’s a ^5! 🙂

  4. What a sweety, and to top it off he is a lil ginger, now that is known as a high pawing in my household of gingers + black, only two will do this, and not all the time, depends on mood! Unlike the dog, that will perform all tricks, just in the hope it may result in something tasty. Your doodlewash has made my morning Charlie 😻
