With very few options of things being celebrated today, I’ve decided to go with National Pigs In A Blanket Day. This made me think of an actual pig in a blanket, but since the day is about the food, I just made a ludicrous doodlewash pairing them both. Not sure what the message is here and any canabilistic overtones are purely unintentional. I simply wanted to draw a sleeping pig. As for the food, pigs in a blanket are a food that consists of wrapping a sausage in a pastry. In the UK, this often refers to a sausage wrapped in bacon, because what goes better with pig parts, than more pig parts. Personally, I prefer the pastry kind, but haven’t had them in years.
In the United States, as with most food, these have been changed from being sausage wrapped pastry and have simply become hot dogs in croissant rolls, usually out of a tube. Hot dogs are the meat producers way of recycling leftovers and consist of the dregs of pork, beef and chicken all ground together until they are reduced into a pulp and then formed into the shape of a real sausage. As a kid, of course, I loved them, but upon learning more about them as an adult, I can’t bring myself to eat one anymore. If you’ve never seen how they’re made, there are many videos just a google away and they will absolutely terrify you.
The first written record of pigs in a blanket can be found in Betty Crocker’s Cooking for Kids in 1957. Though this is the name that became the most popular there are other nicknames for this kooky little treat. You can also refer to them as devils on horseback, kilted sausages, and last, but not least… wiener winks. All proof that this little culinary mashup has no problem being ridiculous and that’s probably why it’s so often served at parties. If you love these little things, then this is your day! And now, looking at this ridiculous doodlewash, it would probably be super cool if you could eat them before the pig wakes up.
Join me any and all days you like during April by celebrating a National or International Day with a doodlewash! Tag your image #doodlewashaday and I’ll feature everyone who played along on doodlewash.com at the end of the month!

Well that’s the best pig in blanket I’ve ever seen – definitely talking about the actual pig. So cute! Let’s just hope the sausages are gone before he awakes and is traumatised. 😉 I did chuckle at noticing this celebration on the calendar; the only time I really have these – the bacon kind – is as part of a Christmas dinner, so I’ll probably wait ’til then… not long now! 😉
Thanks Jacob! 💕😃 Glad ya liked my little pig. Hehe…I was wondering if you’d had the bacon kind. I’ve never tried it. 😊 Think it would be a bit too much for me. Lol
I have never had a pig in the blanket. I loved sausage rolls as a kid! Fun sketch!
You probably dodged a bullet if it’s the American version. Hehe… Glad ya liked this Carmel! 💕😃
Your pig is a squeal, Charlie! The one under the blanket that is! Thanks for the chuckle… 😜🎨💕🐷

I don’t know if I ever will be able to eat another pig in a blanket after seeing this cutie.. Lol. 😜
Hehe… thanks Kari! 💕😃And sorry about that… just couldn’t decide which way to go with this one so I combined them! super weird!😊 Lol
A little pink porker with his tongue hanging out, snoozing next to a plate of pigs in a blanket – couldn’t be more hilarious if you tried.
Lol… glad ya liked this Sharon. 💕😃Was feeling a bit silly yesterday. Probably the nice weather. Hehe
Oh just too cute to eat, he is adorable, I do wonder what he could be dreaming about? Pigs in blankets remind me of Christmas dinner, I will now think of your doodlewash every Christmas, this is an oinktastic doodlewash, Charlie.

That little pig is so cute I’m feeling guilty about likeing sausage and bacon so much, I don’t want to eat the poor guy…but I love bacon, hmm, a dilemma 😉
Thanks, Phil! 😃Haha… yeah… it’s a bit of a dilemma I’ve created here. Not to mention my weirdest and slightly unsettling pairing to date! Lol
