For our prompt of “Farm Animal” today, I made a sketch of a couple of new arrivals in the form of a baby goat and baby chick. As a kid, I would often visit my grandparents on their farm. It was always so exciting during the times of year when new baby animals would appear. Well, it wasn’t magic, of course, but it felt magical when I was a child. I loved getting to pet and interact with the baby goats the most. It’s fun to watch them bounce around in a way that feels more like a cartoon than real life. When a goat gets startled by something, they don’t always run straight in the other direction. More often, they’ll jump on something nearby and even bounce off the side of a wall in their excited state. The baby version is still just trying to figure everything out and it’s a joy to watch them view the world for the very first time. I try to look at the world with those same eyes. That way, life can still manage to surprise me!

These days, I’m always super thrilled when I discover something new. As I get older, that seems to happen less and less. I’ve tried so many different things in life, yet I’m always on the hunt for something new to do! Whenever I have a new project that I’m working on, I wake up excited to get back to it each day. Sometimes, it’s a new book project, but it can also be working on creating a website or revamping one that I already have. Over the past couple of years, I’ve created a new Sketching Stuff site to house all of my own illustrations and promote my books. I have big plans for that site, but I’m still taking things rather slowly. Yet, it’s nice to have a place to send people when they ask what I personally do. Also, this year I decided to give World Watercolor Month a proper home online as well. Cramming every idea into this little site was getting a bit bloated, so it was good to give each of these bigger ideas some extra space to grow. And, I’m still dreaming of what I might do next!

Though it’s wonderful to experience new things, Philippe and I have been rewatching shows we really like lately. There seems to be something brand new to watch appearing every second of each day on streaming services, yet it doesn’t mean it’s something either of us would actually enjoy. In some cases, we’ll watch a trailer for a new show and then stare at each other as though it made no sense whatsoever. Apparently, we were not the target market. Our pup Elliott doesn’t really want us to watch television. If he had his way, we’d spend the entire evening simply playing with him. We make plenty of time for him, but it never seems to be quite enough. He gets bored very easily, which is something I can’t really fault him on, since I’m exactly the same. That’s one of the reasons I adore sketching stuff. At least, in the pages of my sketchbook, I’m always guaranteed to experience that wonderful feeling of new arrivals.

  1. Aw, now you’re out of touch with your inner child. Of course, baby animals (humans, too) are magical. Just because we understand the science behind it doesn’t lessen the magic! Unfortunately, as you grow older, you give yourself less time to just play with babies, and even worse, you find you are the target audience for fewer and fewer new things!

  2. Hola, mi amigo! I think life should be lived fully until the very moment that you take your last breath, which has made my health journey that much more brutally painful. Not being able to live full on with gusto is so painful, but my day is coming! One day very soon, my friend. 💜 Keep doing your thing, Charlie. Never stop searching.
I hope you had a fabulous birthday! 🎉🎉🎉

  3. Hi Charlie! Happy birthday!!! I lived in the country and it was always so magical and exciting to see baby anythings on our property. Your 2 little guys will be the best of friends forever. Hope your day was colorful and exciting! Enjoy your special dessert from Phillipe. 🙂

  4. Aww Charlie,

Babies are still and always magical (except reptile babies – somehow I don’t find them cute at any stage of their life😣). I love babies and since I first hugged my sister on the day she was born, I’ve been convinced that they have magic in them. And yes, baby goats are adorable.🙂 Speaking of WWM, do you plan to make WWM lapel pins or badges???? Perhaps with one of your Doodlewashes on them. I know I’d sure love to buy one. Please please do think about it!

    Love,
    Mugdha

    1. Thanks so much, Mugdha! 😃💕 Yeah… babies are just the cutest! I even find little reptile babies cute actually. hehe As for WWM, there will be logo buttons. I’m thinking about adding my own work this year (previously it was only the artist ambassadors), but I haven’t figured out what! Much love to you! ❤️
