Oh, Bring Us Some Figgy Pudding!

Since I still have Christmas songs running through my head, this one comes to us from the second version of We Wish You A Merry Christmas. I have to admire a song that starts by wishing someone good tidings and then immediately launches into a demand for dessert. In truth, the merry wish was just a friendly ice breaker as the rest of the song escalates into a full demand, threats to stay all evening, and culminates with the assurance that everyone loves figgy pudding, so there’s really no harm done. Personally, though the song is familiar, I’ve never actually tried figgy pudding, which traditionally rarely contains figs any longer and isn’t really a pudding at all. But, the idea of the dessert is a festive one and perhaps one day I’ll actually get to try one day. Until then, in our house, we’ll be sticking to our traditional bûche de Noël instead.

I’m, of course, not one to impose a limit on the number of desserts one can have during the holidays. Indeed, when it comes to lovely sweets, the more the merrier. Philippe had added what we now call Christmas Cake to the mix a few years ago and that became my favorite. Unfortunately, last year, he also discovered how to convert it into a white bûche de Noël and condense everything into a single dessert. Though lovely, I can’t help but feel I got the short end of the yule log with that invention. Thankfully, there’s plenty of chocolates around to fill in the gaps. As a kid, eggnog was also one of my favorites this time of year, without the whiskey, of course. Not the kind in the grocery that’s the consistency of latex paint, but the kind made from scratch at home. Snow ice cream was my very favorite, until we were all informed that snow falling out of our troubled environment today is no longer safe to ingest.

We picked up our tree today, and added the lights. Though we had to go into the suburbs as the city Home Depot had a rather sad and picked through set of trees. We needed a Fraser Fir as the branches are a bit stiffer and can endure the onslaught of ornaments we’ll be attacking it with after dinner tonight. I can’t wait! The cloches are sparkling on the living room table, votives spelling Noël are twinkling on the fireplace mantle, and a green garland with lights is draping the piano. The stockings, as they say are already hung with care, not by the chimney outside, of course as that would be weird. I’ve never understood that bit of the poem. But that’s the fun of this season. Most of it makes little sense, and yet we can all come together and happily demand desserts we’ve never even tried. “Oh, bring us some figgy pudding! And bring it right here!”

  1. Hahahahha! I think your pudding looks delish, but, like you, I prefer the chocolates! I do make a nice Christmas fruitcake though, and melt-in-your-mouth pan shortbread, both of which DH loves. Happy tree decorating! Don’t forget the tinsel.

  2. LOL! Another in-depth analysis of a Christmas carol, revealing things I’ve never noticed or thought about. Fun. Your home sounds like it’s going to look wonderful all decorated. Dessert looks good, as usual.

  3. Charlie, your excitement is palpable but the thing with the stockings being hung outside – I don’t think those are the exact words – It’s “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.” Not outside the house, just not inside the firebox where Santa has to journey – that’s the weird part of the whole story, IMHO. I really like the way your figgy pudding looks though I’ve never tasted it. And to complete this silly diversion I’ve gotten on, I read the title really fast and thought you were going to show us Fudgy Pudding! Talk about being disappointed about the lack of chocolate. Think I need a nap.

    1. haha! Sorry to disappoint!! Fudgy Pudding does sound a bit better! 😃💕And I was just referring to the chimney actually meaning the inside and top bits… not the fireplace or mantle where one normally hangs things. 😉

  4. Christmas pudding (as we Brits call it) is a delicious concoction heavily laced with alcohol. However, people often refuse it not becuase of the taste, but because it is very stodgy and after the excesses of turkey and all the trimmings people have no room, so ice-cream is worth having in, as an alternative. I’m sure there would be even less takers for the original pudding made of beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices. A good nutritious way of filling up in the mini ice-age, but I suspect there’s be less takers today? LOL

    1. Ever sit around with friends and discuss words that you really don’t like? My hate word is “pudding.” I just don’t like the sound of the word…. (although I don’t mind eating it). But I also dislike figs because of all those little seeds in them. So my version of the song would be “don’t bring me that figgie pudding.” I like how you dissect words in classic songs!

    2. Now wait… I guess I didn’t know about the laced with alcohol bit… now it gets more interesting! lol And yeah, the original sounds way too bizarre… but again… if laced with alcohol… perhaps nobody noticed. 😉

  5. Lovely pudding! The plate really makes it pop. So sad on the dessert combo Philippe developed. 🙁 Tell him to stop that silly idea! LOL I’m sure you enjoyed decorating the tree last night and now have a centerpiece of the season to enjoy. How does Phineas like having a real tree in his house? 🎄

  6. Hehehe, english desserts can be a little strange. We won’t even be discussing Spotted Dick. ;o)
I shouldn’t complain though, I’ve totally taken over mushy peas and yes I would put them over french fries!! hehehe. But then I’d dip shoe leather into them if that was t he only way I could eat them. Hugs Charlie.
    (Ok, can’t stop laughing!)

      1. I swear I blush. WHO would call a dessert that?? Yes, I know they have other coloquialisms than we do but seriously, STILL a terrible name for a dessert! It’s much like my uncle’s story of the first time he was in England and his female friend who he was borrowing her sofa from asked him to “knock her up in the morning”. He said he looked her agog then realized she meant WAKE her up. Uhhhh. LOLOLOL.

  7. I cracked up when I read that your husband combined your desserts into one and you got the short end of the yule log … poor Charlie. I’m glad you are all decorated now, it makes everything so much more festive.
