Day 28 - #WorldWatercolorGroup Pancakes In The Morning With Strawberries and Blueberries on a white plate watercolor - #doodlewash

Pancakes In The Morning

One of the best things about my childhood was starting the weekend with Saturday morning cartoons and something a little more special than cereal and milk. My favorite weekend dish was actually French toast, but this treat was more rare and more often than not it would be a plate of pancakes. I’m happy to report that not much has changed as these are the pancakes that Philippe and I had this morning while watching cartoons. The cartoons have changed a bit, and the fruit was not something I would request as a child, but the spirit is very much the same. Also, Philippe makes his pancakes from scratch and when I was a kid it was always from a box of Bisquick. This is a baking mix that can miraculously produce everything from waffles, to muffins, to biscuits, but causes everything to taste roughly the same. I didn’t care, as I really loved the flavor back then. But, I have to say that these pancakes were infinitely superior in taste. Enhanced, of course, by the maple syrup I added just before devouring them.

I was never a kid who liked to sleep in, so I would burst out of bed early and rush down the stairs ready to begin the Saturday morning ritual. My mother, was not the type of adult who slept much, so this worked out perfectly. It was imperative that I be ready to go by 8:00am so I could see the All-New Super Friends. It was popular to add “All-New” or “The New” to television titles back then. This was to let you know that although they hadn’t managed to invent any new characters to top the old ones, they did manage to write some new episodes. That show was really just a warm-up act, though, as the real fun started at 9:00am with The Bug Bunny/Road Runner Show. I was a total fan of that show. It stayed in the same time slot for a few years until it moved to a slightly later one when they discovered it was impossible for little people to switch channels in the middle of watching The Smurfs. I was one of those little people so I was pleased that they made the change. Thankfully, I was allowed to eat in front of the television, but looking back, I’m sure my mother was just worried I’d choke eating my food too fast.

I loved spending those lazy mornings with all of my favorite characters and my “special” breakfasts. It was an amazing time and the morning seemed like an entire day’s worth of fun. Once American Bandstand came on, it was already time for lunch and then an afternoon doing whatever it was I chose to do that day. I do miss having the bliss of being able to do whatever I liked for the remainder of the weekend. Adult chores come next these days and they’re really not very much fun at all. Not that I’m super good at always doing them, but just knowing they’re lurking there waiting to be finished is kind of buzz kill. Back then, it was a constant invention of brand new activities to trump the old ones and that made each day rather exciting. But, even though there’s much about my childhood that I’ve left behind for more adult behavior these days, when the weekend arrives, I simply refuse to give up my cartoons and pancakes in the morning.

  1. Yum yum – a devilishly delicious doodlewash! Ah, now I’m waxing nostalgic for those bygone Saturdays. They really did last forever – Monday and school so far away, no rush, and the prospect of yet another ‘late’ night when evening finally came! Wonderful, even if I’m pretty sure my brekkie remained the same!

Loved Bugs Bunny, Road Runner and all the other classics – daresay I still do! I did like the lay-in, I’ll admit, but there was a time when I’d scramble to be up before 7 just to catch The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. What a fabulously terrible cartoon, but I’ve still quite the soft spot for it! 😉 Long may the pancake/cartoon combo continue!

    1. Thanks, Jacob! 😃💕Yay! Glad to hear you’re a Bugs Bunny/Road Runner fan as well. I was too old when Sonic came out to watch the cartoons, but I did play the games, of course! hehe Just played the Sonic add-on to Lego dimensions and they had the characters from the show! Long live pancakes and cartoons!!

  2. My parents wanted only one morning a week to sleep in so my 2 brothers would make bowls of cereal and go down into our basement and watch cartoons. I love remembering American Bandstand, too. This was a very nice and nostalgic post. Smiles, Robin

  3. Pancakes, the ultimate comfort food. Yours look yummy, especially dripping with all the fruit. Oh so good! When our sons were young, Saturday morning was the only time I had to prepare a decent breakfast, so it was French toast, pancakes, or waffles, and they still remember how delicious they were. Probably because the rest of the week, breakfast was a boring bowl of cereal.

  4. Now I’m hungry. Just wondering, Charlie, what cartoons do you like watching these days, now that we have access to virtually anything? I’m an unabashed super fan of Adventure Time myself. 😄

  5. Every time I read one of your food posts with their delicious illustrations, it makes me think I need a snack…I think there’s some leftover french toast in the refrigerator in fact…
Nothing like cartoons. They could always say what you couldn’t say in real life. (K)
