Hi! It’s Charlie O’Shields, back with another episode of Sketching Stuff! Many of you who listen to this podcast know by now that I’m a very nostalgic person. I love reminiscing about things from the past and thinking back to little moments that I enjoyed as a kid. Why on earth do I DO this? Because I love how much simpler life was in the past and I also love how thinking about it always keeps me well and truly connected to my inner child. From all of the cool gadgets that were coming onto the scene each year to the simplest of things, I’ve spent most of my life just well and truly fascinated.

Another wonderful thing about nostalgia is that its very meaning is a wistful affection for past memories that have happy personal associations. Yeah, not every memory from the past is likely to be perfectly wonderful, but nostalgia allows us to edit out all of those bad bits and simply focus on the beautiful things that happened. Or, as is often the case with me, those oddly beautiful things that just happily to burst into my mind. So, I hope you’ll join me now on a winding journey of thoughtful stories that came to me once upon a time, while I was sketching nostalgia.

Hi Charlie!!, thanks again for the lot of emotions that arise from memories that are so alike… the simple colourful toys, the impressive, heavy telephones, and, may I share, the white giant sugar dessert filled with candy milk which was so sweet I wasn’t even able to finish…sweet memories of the simplest things that warm up our hearts. Cherished colours from childhood, the right mood to approach Christmas time. 🤗🤗🤗

I do think that art is an act of communication between artist and viewer – but it isn’t always the conversation that the artist expects. That makes it a forever-learning experience both ways. There is always something new to learn about the work we’ve done! Thank you for another enjoyable podcast!

Hi Charlie loved the podcast it bought back a few memories for me in that my kids had the same computer and gaming consoles as you. The way you look at art is quite interesting, I love brilliant colours as well it does make the world seem a happier place. I actually found you in a comment that Cinnamon Cooney put on her Face Book page for a person that was looking at doing watercolours, she gave a shout out for Doodlewash and Word water colour month. I am not sure if you no of her but she can be found on You Tube under Art Sherpa

Merry two days after Christmas Charlie. I love your inner child. I am going on 80 and My inner child is alive, well and very creative. LOL I figure if I don’t grow up, I will never get old? But the process of creating a work of art is always a thrill. I often like what I have achieved, but I still love the process more. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and processes and especially……your inner child
