With precious little to choose from for this letter, we ended up with a quail. Well, to be more accurate, we ended up with a quail’s head as that’s all I could manage in my short time frame. It’s Friday night, so I’m squeezing in this little entry before starting the evening. Hope all of you are having a wonderful Friday evening and are gearing up for a great weekend ahead!
As it turns out, quails are not the most interesting creatures, at least based on my further reduced two minutes of research. They are omnivores. Their staple diet is seeds, though they also consume insects and fruit. Quails spend the majority of time on the ground because they can’t really fly long distances. Knowing that they sort of suck at flying, they’ll choose to run from predators as a first impulse. Their coloring is a form of camouflage to hopefully avoid the need to run altogether.
And thus ends my haphazardly acquired knowledge of quails. There was a bit about laying 10 to 20 eggs at a time, which I guess is rather a lot, but overall I wasn’t super interested in quails. Apologies to quail lovers everywhere! Next up is “R,” which has a few more possibilities, so if you have a suggestion, please let me know in the comments!

Love the Quail! it is lovely Charlie! beautifully painted 🙂
Thanks so much Debi! 💕😃Appreciate that!!
you’re welcome!
LOL! Well, you did an awfully adorable quail for not being interested in them. <3 There are all kinds of quails. It looks like you painted a California Quail, known for their hanging out with movie stars (kidding!). 🙂 My favorite is the Northern Bobwhite because I like their call, though I'd love to see a Mountain Quail for their wacky head plumage. My son's favorite is the Montezuma Quail. On one of our southwest trips, we got to see the Scaled Quail. And that was waaaaay more than you ever wanted to know about quails…hahaha! Happy Friday night, my dear!
Thanks Teresa! 💕😃Lol…yeah…it was fun to doodlewash but the facts were a snooze this time! 😊hehe
Not everyone and everything is fascinating, but you always make them look beautiful! <3
Thanks friend!! I appreciate that! ❤️
I like that it’s just the head. Looks like a portrait!
Ravens are pretty interesting birds.
Yeah…I liked the eyes on them when they’re closer up! And also it meant painting less features. 😊hehe
For a quick drawing, you captured the quail perfectly. Beautiful feather textures and eye. My R suggestion is Rat! 😄💕
Thanks Sharon!! 💕😃I wasn’t sure about this one at first… had to go so fast on the feathers and I didn’t know what would come out! Hehe Glad you like it!!
Love your rendition of the this quail. They are a very familiar sight in Arizona. Nothing cuter than seeing a mother quail running down the mistreat with a bunch chicks following her.
Down the street that is. Darn autocorrect.
Hehe…autocorrect is evil! 😉
Thanks Teri!! 💕😃 And ohhhh…that sounds like an adorable sight!!
Quite the Quail doodlewash without question, Charlie! 💕 I found an empty quail’s nest in my lavender bush one Spring. I had no idea that they laid their eggs so close to the ground. They move rather quickly when a big black cat is after them! Lol! 😜 I vote for Rabbit for “R”! But only if it is a rascally rabbit! Lol! 😄🎨🐰
Thanks Jill! Glad you liked my quail! Hehe 💕😃 Yeah…I didn’t realize they don’t really fly much and prefer the ground. And a rabbit is definitely in consideration!! 😉👍🏻 They’re cute!
Quails are rather comical to watch. Good job Charlie. Have a good weekend.
Thanks Susan!! 💕😃 Hope you have a fantastic weekend as well!
This is really incredible! The details are amazing, Charlie! It’s wonderful to see your doodlewashes and learn something new with each post! Lots of options for ‘r’. Can’t wait to see your next post! ❤️😜
Thanks so much Kari!! 💕😃This little adventure has been more educational than I realized! Probably because I have zero personal stories about any of these animals! Lol 😊
Good choice! Like how the blue fluoresces through.
Thanks!! Got to use my new blue ink…hehe…glad you liked how it turned out! 😃
Bravo, Charlie for your awesome Q. I quite like quail, with their funny rotund bodies. The eggs are rather pretty but tiny so you would need quite a few to make an omelet so it’s a good job that they lay so many!
Thanks so much Tori! 💕😃And I’ve never had a quail egg omelet before! Hehe Bet it would take a lot of eggs though!
The quintessential quail! You actually made it beautiful!! Of course you did. You are Charlie O!!! ❤️☺️👍
Awww you’re sweet!! Thanks Jodi! ❤️😃 Yeah…slim pickens for Q! Hehe… But glad to get something for it! 😊
Amazing details in the painting!! Brilliant work
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it!! 😊😃
Well done, Charlie! Really lovely. Would love to see a rabbit too. Maybe Bugs Bunny?
Thanks Laura!! ❤️😃And I love Bugs! But I think I’m gonna keep it real for this series. Though I used to wish Bugs was real and would come visit me! 😊hehe
Lovely quail, Charlie! Very alert! I’d not seen the California quail before, surprisingly enough. I just spent ages looking at quail eggs – I had no idea they were so pretty.
I’m probably too late to suggest Rs, but never mind – how about Rat, Rhino or Rattlesnake? On Laura’s comment – you do need to do Bugs Bunny someday!! 😉 When I was six I wanted to call my cat Bugs as I loved him so much, but inexplicably I was overruled and we settled on Oscar Bugs instead.
Thanks Jacob! Hehe!! Bugs Bunny is awesome!! I thought about a rhino but I’m always partial to furry things! 😊 So that’s where I headed today! It’s not Bugs, but a cousin I guess. Hehe
Woop woop! Spoilers, though 😉 I look forward to seeing it!
Love your California Quail Charlie. I don’t really know much about them but I loved seeing a little family of quails scurry by. They really are cute round birds.
Thanks Cathe! I think I’ve seen one in person but not a group. I bet that would be a cool sight!
