With precious little to choose from for this letter, we ended up with a quail. Well, to be more accurate, we ended up with a quail’s head as that’s all I could manage in my short time frame. It’s Friday night, so I’m squeezing in this little entry before starting the evening. Hope all of you are having a wonderful Friday evening and are gearing up for a great weekend ahead!

As it turns out, quails are not the most interesting creatures, at least based on my further reduced two minutes of research. They are omnivores. Their staple diet is seeds, though they also consume insects and fruit. Quails spend the majority of time on the ground because they can’t really fly long distances. Knowing that they sort of suck at flying, they’ll choose to run from predators as a first impulse. Their coloring is a form of camouflage to hopefully avoid the need to run altogether.

And thus ends my haphazardly acquired knowledge of quails. There was a bit about laying 10 to 20 eggs at a time, which I guess is rather a lot, but overall I wasn’t super interested in quails. Apologies to quail lovers everywhere! Next up is “R,” which has a few more possibilities, so if you have a suggestion, please let me know in the comments!

  1. LOL! Well, you did an awfully adorable quail for not being interested in them. <3 There are all kinds of quails. It looks like you painted a California Quail, known for their hanging out with movie stars (kidding!). 🙂 My favorite is the Northern Bobwhite because I like their call, though I'd love to see a Mountain Quail for their wacky head plumage. My son's favorite is the Montezuma Quail. On one of our southwest trips, we got to see the Scaled Quail. And that was waaaaay more than you ever wanted to know about quails…hahaha! Happy Friday night, my dear!

  2. Love your rendition of the this quail. They are a very familiar sight in Arizona. Nothing cuter than seeing a mother quail running down the mistreat with a bunch chicks following her.

  3. Quite the Quail doodlewash without question, Charlie! 💕 I found an empty quail’s nest in my lavender bush one Spring. I had no idea that they laid their eggs so close to the ground. They move rather quickly when a big black cat is after them! Lol! 😜 I vote for Rabbit for “R”! But only if it is a rascally rabbit! Lol! 😄🎨🐰

  4. This is really incredible! The details are amazing, Charlie! It’s wonderful to see your doodlewashes and learn something new with each post! Lots of options for ‘r’. Can’t wait to see your next post! ❤️😜

  5. Bravo, Charlie for your awesome Q. I quite like quail, with their funny rotund bodies. The eggs are rather pretty but tiny so you would need quite a few to make an omelet so it’s a good job that they lay so many!

  6. Lovely quail, Charlie! Very alert! I’d not seen the California quail before, surprisingly enough. I just spent ages looking at quail eggs – I had no idea they were so pretty.

I’m probably too late to suggest Rs, but never mind – how about Rat, Rhino or Rattlesnake? On Laura’s comment – you do need to do Bugs Bunny someday!! 😉 When I was six I wanted to call my cat Bugs as I loved him so much, but inexplicably I was overruled and we settled on Oscar Bugs instead.
