For Day 26 of World Watercolor Month and our optional prompt of “Bell,” I sketched a tabby cat ringing a bell for service. Pets really do have it great. At least all of the spoiled pets I know like my own and those of my friends. It’s like they’re staying in a fancy 5-star hotel, even though it’s the same home we inhabit. Our world involves so many tasks to complete in a day and theirs just revolves around food and love. It’s a rather enviable position really. Though, I really can’t complain too much since being married to Philippe is like having a personal chef. I do have to do all of the dishes and clean the kitchen, though. I keep hoping I can train my pup Elliott to do that for me, but he doesn’t seem to hold any interest in that task. Indeed, he’d rather spend the day playing or snacking on treats. And, in truth, outside of taking time to write and play with watercolor, I’d rather spend the remainder of my day doing the same!

This morning, Elliott didn’t really want to get out of bed. He now sleeps on a couch in a separate room from us since he’s all grown up now. I found him cuddled up in a ball and when I came over to pet him he just stretched out and went back to sleep. After a little time, he finished his fifth yawn and jumped off the couch and started stretching. A few more long and gaping yawns later, he slowly walked to the stairs, stretched one last time, and went downstairs. He wasn’t interested in going outside or even eating breakfast at first. Apparently, the date he had with his little friend yesterday wore him out entirely. Eventually, he did manage to rally the energy to eat something and stumbled outside to lay on his cot on the deck. As I was trying to take care of him, I realized that I myself was rather exhausted as well. If I could have spent the day curled up in a ball, that would have been lovely!

That said, it’s been years since I’ve done yoga, so I think a ball would be a bit too aspirational. Yet, a bit of time to relax on the couch and read a book would have been much appreciated. Instead, I had to rush off to work, which doesn’t seem fair at all. It’s rather adorable, though, when Elliott finally manages to exhaust himself. It’s a rather rare occurrence as he has an insane amount of energy. If the energy of young pets could be bottled and sold, it would be the hottest product on the market! Each time something arrives from Amazon, it’s rare that it’s ever for me or Philippe. It’s usually a restock of treats or a new toy of some kind. For Elliott’s part, he does seem somewhat appreciative of the things he receives. Yet, the moment that he needs or wants something new, he’s not particularly subtle in his approach. Whether it’s flipping the mail slot in the door demanding to go outside or sitting next to an empty food dish, the message is always clear. “Service please!”

  1. It’s not difficult to spoil a pet…they give us so much love. Our 3 cats have both my husband and me very well trained and they provide us with hours of entertainment as well as love.

    1. Hello Charlie,

I adore the kitty and am a wee bit jealous of Elliott. It’s funny how on first glancing at today’s sketch I thought that the kitty is about to uncover a tiny cloche hiding a scrumptious tidbit. And I spent a few minutes gazing at it thinking up all sorts of things that could’ve been there before going ahead and reading your post. And then I was wondering if Elliott is feeling okay or just a tad too tired. So am glad he’s just a bit tired and will bounce back soon. 🙂 Sending him a big hug,

      Love,
      Mugdha

      1. Thanks so much, Mugdha! 😃💕 Elliott is always like that after a playdate the previous evening. He runs and runs to much… it’s fun to see. But then… time to sleep in! I think I’d sleep through the entire next day if I ran like that! lol Big hugs to you!! ❤️

  2. The other day I fell down the rabbit hole of watching videos of Canine freestyle dancing, and was thinking more people should get into this. Not only would it make life interesting for dogs, and be a way to use up their energy even in a fairly small space, but it would be fabulous exercise for their owners. I’m not sure how much I’d be up for it, but if I do get another dog, I’m going to try it.

    1. Hi, Linda! It’s actually pretty normal for them to have lazy days. They’re like us in many ways. Some days they just want to lounge around. 😀 When we bought Monster a brand new bed, I gave him a bath and put a clean towel in his bed. We couldn’t get him out of bed for a week! All he wanted to do was sleep. I would literally have to carry him outside to go pee-pee. He would run back to his bed and back to sleep. 😂😂😂😂

  3. Hola, Charlie! 😀 Now, I don’t think that I need to share any stories or give any examples of my time with Monster for anyone to know that he was spoiled. 😂😂😂 But it was all a huge expression on my behalf of the love that I had for him and what he meant to us. 😍😍😍
Ooo, a lazy day. Made even better if it’s a rainy, lazy day! 💜 Big hugs, my friend.
