Day 16 - Charlies Shiny Da Vinci Watercolor Trio - ©Doodlewash

My Shiny New Da Vinci Watercolor Trio!

Today, I launched a fun new project with Da Vinci Paint Co. where a trio of artists, including me, selected three little 8ml watercolor tubes to create a brand new product! It was a blast and since today’s Doodlewash art challenge prompt was “art supplies,” I figured I would sketch my own little Da Vinci watercolor trio that I dubbed my “shiny” trio. The announcement post had a pristine set of tubes in order to promote my new product, but in reality, the wonky tubes shown here, thumb-squished with my childlike exuberance, are actually what you’ll find on my kitchen countertop where I paint each day. Not shiny and new, but well-loved and used daily, so I decided to quickly sketch them as they really are in my house using only my three trio colors of Terra Cotta, Cobalt Blue, and Nickel Azo Yellow. If you’d like to learn more about my trio and how I use marbles to make my unconventional watercolor mixing charts then click here! If you’ve already read that bit then, thanks, and I hope you’ll read on for today’s daily ramble.

Many of you who read the About The Doodlewash section at the end of each of my posts will quickly notice that I tend to use a rather limited palette of colors. In truth, I’m the same when it comes to eating out at a restaurant. When I find the dish I like, I prefer to simply order it again and again. I know I could mix things up and try something new, but having the same dish, even at a fine restaurant, makes it feel like “comfort food,” my favorite food of all! So when it comes to painting, I have no qualms about selecting the same colors over and over again. They’ve become like family and meeting up with them again and again each day is like visiting old friends. We’ve gotten to know each other well and can anticipate what the other is about to say before we even say it. This, to me, is a rather wonderful relationship to have when it comes to unruly watercolor. What once felt like an awkward dance at a teenage mixer turns into a lovely ballet of real connection. This is precisely what keeps me coming back each and every day to paint. And so, I hope to introduce a bit of my family to yours!

And yes, I sincerely hope you’ll purchase my new “Shiny” Da Vinci Watercolor Trio! It truly helps keep this site alive and my crazy dream of creating an ad-free place where artists can promote themselves and grow and thrive! I’m horrible when it comes to self-promotion as I’d entirely prefer to promote other artists instead, but projects like these help pay for all the community features that I’ve placed here on Doodlewash. So I thank you in advance for your wonderful support! And please also support my friends and fellow artists, (there, that’s much easier!) Tonya at Scratchmade Journal and Jenn at Just Add Water Silly, the duo who complete this fun Da Vinci Trio project! As many of you know, I have a dream that we can somehow all band together and create a force of watercolor that paints the world and makes it a happier place to live. A lofty goal, to be sure, so I’ll kick things off by simply submitting to you this little unassuming doodlewash of my shiny new Da Vinci watercolor trio!

  1. I’ll need to check, but I am pretty sure I have all of these but the terra cotta. I’m kind of a paint my junkie. Just like the crows that go after shiny things, when I see a fun new color, I must have it! I’m fact, I ordered some Aussie Red Gold today because it was so beautiful!
