Perhaps one of the easiest fruits to eat, a banana comes in its own wrapper for holding while folding away to reveal the fruit. I enjoy bananas precisely for this reason. They’re no fuss and don’t require a knife to remove a pesky core, or incessant gnawing to ensure you’re getting all the good bits out. You can just grab one on the go and enjoy it whenever the mood strikes you. It’s the laziest, most amazing treat there is! Also, along with a pie covered in whipped cream, they’ve the been the source of jokes for more than a century. Slipping on a banana peel has been depicted in countless cartoons and vaudeville shows. There’s a theory that people used the term banana peel as a more polite way to refer to slipping on pet droppings. This is gross, to be sure, so it’s nice the actual origin of the joke failed to take hold. Instead, we’re left with pratfalls on banana peels to make us giggle as we revel in schadenfreude.

I would love to think that I’m above this feeling of reveling in the misfortune of others, but I have to admit to loving those hidden camera shows as a kid. Watching the silly practical jokes played on unsuspecting people was kind of funny, mostly because it wasn’t happening to me. When the roles are reversed, it’s not quite as hilarious to be sure. It was always safe to sit behind a television and giggle, where nobody could possibly see what I was doing. Part of me feels a bit guilty for doing so, but I wasn’t alone, so it didn’t bother me all that much at the time. Today, I feel a little bit differently. That’s why, each day, I share whatever I made in whatever form it came in. I don’t edit my doodlewashes or the rambles I quickly type after creating them. Some days, are great when everything comes together perfectly and others, well, aren’t quite as amazing. But perhaps those jokes of my youth have helped me in some small way. Instead of getting frustrated, I just giggle at myself.

While laughing at others is certainly part of who we are, I also think that being able to laugh at ourselves is a wonderful gift. For example, I have so many ridiculous projects planned at the moment that I’ve no idea how I can possibly accomplish them all. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day, so one would think I would abandon some of them and move on. But that’s not quite how I work. Instead, I just chase them all like a crazy person and hope that at least some of them manage to occur. This is not a sensible way to approach anything, but being sensible is never how anyone makes the impossible happen. No, when you really want something in life, taking risks is the only real way to proceed. Dreams are worth chasing, no matter how insane or impossible they may seem. And if you chase them, some will come true, and if some don’t, just giggle and move on. What’s the worse that could happen, after all? There’s still a bit of joy to be found in slipping on a banana peel.

  1. Looks good enough to eat. So real looking. You were brave to peel and paint the inside too. I took the easy way….just a banana. 😁 your story is so funny. Love it.

  2. Didn’t know about the pet poo thing and the banana peel, hmmm. You are right about those old shows, the jokes were always funny when they happened to someone else. Now what does that say about us?!? 😉

  3. Yes! I peel that it is very important not to take yourself seriously. But I banana know what floats your boat when the tide turns and carries you in too many directions. Okay, I’ll take pity and just complement you on your beautiful banana painting. *ba-nan-na-na giggles like a minion*

    1. Aww you’re just so sweet! I really can’t thank you enough for the encouragement. I show up each day with my rambles and it’s always wonderful to know that someone feels they actually have something to say. 😃💕

  4. Lol, Thanks to you and Sandra now I keep hearing minions singing *ba-nan-na-na……. Now I want a banana and all I have is grapes… You can’t walk around singing grapes… It just doesn’t work…. 😊

  5. Beautiful painting and beautiful thoughts Charlie!Laughing at oneself is not an easy job for everyone. But I agree if someone can laugh at himself, his living will be more meaningful 🙂

  6. You reminded me of my own banana story, Charlie. The peel may have dropped out of the trash as a neighbor dragged their cart to the curb for pick up. It had blackened so it matched the asphalt outside our house. I slipped enough to do a fair mimic of the splits but caught myself before long term damage. So your banana looks innocent and appealing – until you think of all that “peel” implies.
