Smoking Mr. Potato Head

Mr. Potato Head Doodlewash

I almost skipped a post today as I was insanely busy and had absolutely no time to paint. But I figured that there’s no time like the present to try a crazy speedy doodlewash with no pen of another of my childhood toys. From here, I would typically add more detail, but there’s no time today, so this is where we landed. Today’s star is Mr. Potato Head, as he appeared when I was a kid. A strange and ominous creature with giant lips, weird eyes, and doing the unthinkable… smoking!

Yep, back in the day, the favorite little Mr. Potato Head add-on was a little black pipe that your little character could smoke to its heart’s content. This was still an upgrade to the first Mr. Potato Head which was just a bunch of plastic accoutrements that you added to an actual potato. This was changed after mother’s everywhere complained about rotting potatoes found underneath their children’s beds. Something I would have imagined the creator’s to anticipate, but apparently this wasn’t the case.

When I showed Philippe he just grimaced and said that he preferred the one from Toy Story, and I think I have to agree. I hadn’t really remembered what the one I played with looked like and after really looking at it again, I can only say that they made all the right improvements. This version was a little odd to say the least. And I got bored with him really quickly. I think that’s why I decided to just steal his feet and create an entirely new character with fabric when I was little. But the concept of creating a character was super fun, and something I still enjoy to this day.

I was just about to set off to bed, wondering where Charlie was today, and then here you are! In the nick of time! Perfect.

Great doodlewash, and done so quickly… nothing gets in your way! But jeepers, ominous is right! I’m not sure I’d have slept knowing such a thing was in my bedroom, staring. I agree with Philippe; definitely prefer the one from Toy Story!!

Thanks Jacob!! Yeah…looking back, this one is truly terrifying! Lol I think the Toy Story one stuck in my head so I assumed that’s what I played with. I didn’t…it was this bizarre specimen instead. 😥hehe

I just had to go back and look at our Toy Story friend to make me less frightened 😉

OMG… product of my googling… you should totally do Rex!! Eeee!

Haha! I just might! I’m running out of things to paint. Should have left voting turned on. It was easier that way! Lol

      • Jacob 2 years ago

Well, doubtless I would squeal if you did!! I forgot how adorable and hilarious he was! I’m running out too, actually – I was in the mood to make something today but nothing was jumping out. Very frustrating!

Random doodlewash prompt for you: chocolate train cake. That’s nostalgia!

Oh my gosh!! I had to google that to see…I remember those! Cool… The biggest challenge would be finding a photogenic one that doesn’t look like well… Unappetizing… Lol

That’s true enough – they certainly seemed more inviting as children! Not that it’d put me off sampling today – they *are* cakes, after all. 😉

True…I’ve never been one to turn down cake! 😊

So darn cute, Charlie, I was a 1950s kid so we used the real potato. Hehe. My mom was probably one of the complainers. 😜

    • Author

Thanks Sharon! 💕😃 And haha! Yeah…I bet you mom filed a complaint. I can’t imagine what those rotting potato heads were like for parents. As a kid that could have been cool though! Lol

I LOVE Mr. Potato Head! 😜 Awesome doodlewash with no sketch, Charlie! He is one super Spud! hehe! 😃👍🎨💜

    • Author

Lol…they should have made a Super Spud version!! That would have been awesome!!😎😃hehe…glad you liked this Jill!! ❤️😃

      • Jill Kuhn 2 years ago

They actually make a Party Spud and Spudette – that I had to buy! I plan to play, I mean draw them one of these days! Hehe! 😜🎨💙

      • Author

Yes!!! Please do that!! Lol I want to see them!! 😉😃😃

The simplicity of the non-inked rendering really gives it a retro look. Yeah, I had the real potato too. (K)

Thanks Kerfe! 💕😃 This one did have a different look to it. And cool to the real potato…I bet you made some awesome characters.

How cute! I agree with Philippe that the one from Toy Story is the best. My kids had a kit of Mr. And Mrs. Potato Head with the different body parts and expressions to stick in.

Your dedication to doodlewashing is amazing! ❤️

    • Author

Awww thanks Kari! ❤️😃It’s somewhere between dedication and addiction! Lol And yes! I remember the Mr and Mrs versions. Fun!

      • Kari 2 years ago

It’s the best kind of addiction for sure!! 😜

I like your doodlewash of it, even if it does seem ominous. I would call it the Adult version of Mr. Potato Head.

I remember someone comment on my myLot page for I was asking what they thought of the 3D movie The Little Prince, without mentioning spoilers. Someone from Germany sends me a reply and says that interpretation for the Little Prince should have been left to the imagination. The concern the commenter pointed out is that the 3D movie might become some sort of a benchmark if interpretations of the movie will be made in the future, and it should not be limited to that.

So the bottomline of my comment is that, whatever your interpretation of Mr. Potato Head is, it’s all up to you. Just like The Little Prince, though Antoine de Saint Exupery illustrated the story himself.

Thanks!! Hehe That’s a good way to look at it! But I have to admit the movie version improved him in this case quite a bit! Lol This is a strange “adult” version. I was apparently young at the wrong time for this character! Lol

That’s ok, I still like it anyway. Keep on drawing anyway. Cheers and have a great day!

Very cool. I love the colors. and shadow.

  9. Aw, so cute with his little pipe! Glad you took the time to post, Charlie! 💜

Good for you for not giving in to limited time. Your Mr. Potato Head is fantastic and takes on a different look without the use of lines. Super cool. I know Mr. Potato Head was one of the toys I grew up with, or so I think, but I can’t remember a darn thing about him. I think there is a Mrs. Potato Head now, maybe to help add some imagination to the Potato family?!

    • Author

Or I guess to spawn little potato babies…though I don’t remember those. If they didn’t exist they should! Lol Thanks Cathe! 💕😃 I’m determined to make and post something, even if it fees rushed. Glad you liked this one!!

wow, I don’t remember the pipe at all. Perhaps my mother “censored” the potato head before I got it….I wouldn’t be surprised!

    • Author

Haha! Quite possible… but then again it was all the time of candy cigarettes so pretty much anything was possible back then! Lol
