For our prompt of “Squirrel” today, I ended up with a little squirrel grabbing an apple with its tail. This was one of those fun doodles, where I didn’t really have a concept and simply started scribbling to see what might appear on the page. Philippe had just purchased a big bag of apples, so I added one to give our hero something fresh and colorful to enjoy. Often, I feel a bit like this little rodent. I’m always on the hunt for something new and interesting. Indeed, I get bored rather easily. I’m always more excited when I have a new project going, or even a fun new book or video game that I look forward to experiencing. But truly, I’m equally rather easy to please. I saw some fresh buds on a tree when I was out walking yesterday and was thrilled! Like seriously excited as though something like that had never happened in the history of the world. I guess it’s my childlike wonder that’s always at play. Just when I think I’m in a rut and feeling less creative or lacking in ambition, the littlest surprise can thrill me!
This past week, we had several rainy, cloudy days. It can be like that here for days on end this time of year, to the point that it feels like the new normal. While I don’t mind a rainy day on occasion, when the weather starts to feel like its formed a full protest against the sun, I get a bit bleary. Today, is a bright clear blue sky with a lovely yellow sun. My mood immediately changed, and I suddenly felt energized. I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do with this newfound energy. I mean, so far I’ve just managed to sketch a squirrel. But it’s a bright and familiar feeling that I realize now had been missing this past week. I wasn’t particularly depressed, but I was definitely less motivated. And though I should be jumping on that big project I’ve already cooked up, I think I might throw caution to the wind and jump to something else instead.
This is what I always did when I was a kid. And, now that I’m older, I still do the same thing much of the time. While my Adult Mind takes stock and thinks me a touch reckless, I can actually hear my Inner Child giggling with glee. In my experience, any feeling of creative block is best served by trying something totally different. As much as I’d like to push every project through to completion as quickly as I can, I’ve learned that doesn’t work like it should. In fact, it can have the opposite effect. So, I’ll be grabbing for that next shiny apple that I see! I’ll rush forward with wonder and excitement, and toss any plan that I had out the window. Sometimes, the only real way forward is to blindly follow one’s heart and see where it leads. When I take the time to feel more and think less, I know that I’m on that wild and wonderful path to discovering something fresh and new!

Oh Charlie this is so delightful. I adore the way the squirrel is wrapping his tail around that apple.
I love that about you – it is so cool to know that there is someone out there who gets as excited about seeing that first bud in spring that I do. oh oh …. and our nesting boxes are starting to have activity. I love watching the fat little sparrows wiggle in and out it gets me giggling every single time I see it – as if I have never seen it before. I’m sitting here with a silly grin just thinking about it. I love watching the birds bring their twigs, strings, bits and bobs and loving building their nests. Those are the things I love about spring. :).
Never stop reaching for the shiny things Charlie :). <3
Thanks so much, Zoie! 😃💕 Those are the wonderful things about spring. So fun to watch birds creating a nest. We had a dove that nested on our neighbors outdoor security speaker. hehe It was fun to see!
LOLOL – so much fun! That would be hilarious!
One of the things I really dislike is having a project I’m not really into while meanwhile, more interesting ideas are popping up in my head, and I really wanna do those instead. All to often, if I feel I have to finish the first project because of deadlines, I’ll lose interest in those other ideas, and I always feel as though I missed something.
I agree! 😃💕 Yeah, that’s why I tend to just let those other little projects distract me.. sometimes I find out there’s a bit one to be putting my time into anyway!
Mi amigo, Charlie! I didn’t have internet last week so I missed it, but I’m back! 💜 While your watercolor paintings are always beautiful, squirrels and I have a complicated relationship. 😂😂😂 The powdered cayenne pepper stopped them from tearing up my potted plants, we still give each other the eye. 😂😂😂 Super sweet painting. I missed you. Yesterday was my Gordo’s anniversary. I miss him. 💜 you, Charlie.
Hola, mi amiga! 😃💕 I missed you!! And that’s too funny… we had the same relationship with squirrels trying to keep them of our tomato plant. They don’t even like tomatoes… just to taste them and throw them down! lol Sending you love for Gordo! And a huge hug to you and much love! ❤️
Great doodle, Charlie. I’ve seeing new buds on all of my shrubs in the garden. That makes me really happy.
Delightful little squirrel! Spring is a long way off here Charlie. We have huge snowbanks that just don’t melt fast enough for my taste. The backyard squirrels and chipmunks that Rosie likes to chase are still waiting for warmer weather. Cheers!
Thanks so much, Louise! 😃💕 Oh wow! That snow doesn’t want to leave it seems! We barely got any snow this year here. I actually missed it! 😊
Thanks so much, Gary! 😃💕 Yeah… seeing things come to life and burst into color again always makes me so happy as well!
Those first little green buds and a sunny sky are most definitely energizers. Even here in Florida there are definitely signs of Spring: new spring green leaves on the trees, Royal Poinciana trees are canopies of golden yellow blooms and even my little 4 o’clocks are starting to bloom. Love Spring!
That sounds sooooo pretty! 😃💕 Yeah, spring is such a fun and energizing season. I wish it lasted longer as I’m not as huge of a fan when it comes to our hot summers. hehe
Hello Charlie,
Big hi from the jungle! I love the squirrel’s expression. He seems to have found an apple when he didn’t expect there to be anything, realizing in the same moment that it was all his to enjoy. 😊 It’s raining here too but I love getting drenched in the rain. Gear up for some pics…
Love,
Mugdha
Hello, my friend! 😃💕 I hope things are going well in the jungle and I can’t wait to see some pics!! Much love to you! ❤️
Wow that is a very unique take on your “Squirrel Prompt” Nice colour palette and it is so neat how the squirrels tail wraps around the apple.
Thanks so much, Shawn! 😃💕
