Sushi Night – Best Foods Rolled Into One

I’m not actually eating this tonight, but doodlewashes can also be made of dreams and I’m currently dreaming of sushi. I’ve always found sushi to be the perfect food. It combines cooked vinegared rice with other awesome ingredients like seafood and vegetables. And all of it is beautifully presented as a bite-size piece of heaven. Even eating with chopsticks thrills me as it feels so civilized. Early forms were made of fermented rice which earned it the name of sushi, a now antiquated word for any other context, that literally once meant “sour-tasting.” Thankfully this is no longer the case.

Though many people claim to like it, when faced with a choice between this and something like fries, they’ll often respond they’re “not in the mood for sushi” tonight. This strikes me as funny for some reason, because I’ve never once heard anyone say they’re “not in the mood” for French fries. Perhaps it’s the fish, perhaps it’s feeling too lazy to bother with chopsticks, but for some, this is food for a special night. Not me. I could chow down on this stuff daily in a very uncivilized manner if I were allowed to do so. I love it!

It is indeed possible to make sushi at home, but we no longer have room on the counter for a rice steamer. The lack of room on the counter is a much harder solution to solve than solving the lack of a steamer. Without a proper pantry, the main kitchen counter has a become a worrisome corner with food stacked Jenga-style, waiting to collapse at the first breeze. I’m assuming the steamer, if we had one, would go there. So tonight, I’m just dreaming of sushi. But hopeful for a time very soon when that wonderful dream will come true.

    If I could, every night would be sushi night, I am always in the mood for sushi! I personally feel that you have to use chopsticks, the experience and taste (in my mind) isn’t the same without them. I LOVE this post! Your doodlewash makes my heart jump around for joy! If only I could go get some 🙁 My favorite restaurant to order it is about 60 miles away….darn!

        That is….. 60 miles to my favorite sushi but we do have several sushi establishments that I have yet to try out which are closer 25-30 miles but that is probably still pretty far. lol

    Fantastic doodlewash! As you might have guessed, I would take sushi over fries any day! We actually went to a Japanese restaurant for Mother’s Day and my youngest had sushi.. And yes, proper rice cooker is important for making sushi! I actually sponsored a sushi making class as a fundraiser for our temple.. It’s fun to be with friends and make sushi! ❤️

    I love the ‘careful, but not too careful’ arrangement. Which area to attack first? 😉 I must confess that sushi has never massively appealed to me – bar chopsticks, they’re fun – and so I’ve not been tempted to try it. But again, your pictures and your words are reminding me that I desperately need to get out more, at least insofar as eating in is concerned!

    Very cool sushi doodlewash, they look delicious. Las Vegas has a sushi buffet called Makino’s it’s really awesome if you love sushi. Even the dessert are little sushi size morsels. I thinks it’s time for a visit! 😍 🍣 thanks for the fun post Charlie.

    I could eat sushi every day too. Your presentation is beautiful!
    I was actually introduced to sushi and sake by a friend 40 years ago…way before it became popular. Luckily, now it’s available in the supermarket, and not just at a special night out at a Japanese restaurant! (K)

    OK, don’t laugh, Charlie…but I have never had sushi. 😳🍜 I must say that if I was to try it, I would definitely choose one of your doodledwashed goodies! I think they got a bad wrap (no pun intended) when they used raw fish. 🐠 So if I was to try one, which one would you recommend?! 😉

      You could start with a roll containing just vegetables, like avocado, or crispy salmon skin. Or unagi, which is cooked eel that tastes quite sweet. Go on, be brave!

Hehe… actually I like avocado rolls best which don’t have any fish at all (I made a mixture for color, but would have made all the all rolls green if I were eating them!)! lol But if I’m having the fish, then salmon (shown here) and tuna (not shown) are my faves. Hehe😊

    Now I’m hungry…I LOVE sushi any time of the day, even for breakfast! That was a real shock for a japanese friend for they would never ever have sushi in the morning:-) Wonderful sketch!

    Your sushi is gorgeous. I could eat sushi every day also, and you will never hear me ask for fries. I didn’t particularly like them as a kid and don’t love them now. Though when my hubby orders them, I’ll eat a couple of fries. Now sushi I love and hubby won’t touch. I enjoy eating with chopsticks, he thinks they’re intended to stir hot cocoa. We get together on popcorn!

I’m coming for dinner, oh yes this is a fav of mine, leave the fries, sushi is the best, I love a little wasabi too, not so keen on the additional ginger, no idea why as I actually love ginger, but not on the sushi. You have created a great choice, just sorry you can only dream about it, and not savour the flavour of your fab doodlewash …..yum yum.

    I could eat this right now, and I’ve just had porridge. You’ve captured it so well, the rice has great texture and the sauce looks perfect, glossy and deep. Mmmm. 🙂

      Awww thanks Rebecca! 😃💕I really was worried about getting that sauce right. It had so many colors in it and dark reflections still mystify me a bit. Glad ya liked it!

    I’ve been loving them ever since my first Japanese boyfriend dragged me into teh Marina Del Rey Charthouse and ordered raw tuna (not on their menu, but he ate there frequently)… I like raw fish almost always better than cooked. Great image!
