I’m not a portrait artist and don’t particularly like drawing humans, myself included, so I didn’t do a proper selfie for today’s prompt. Instead, I’ve did a quick 2-color doodlewash of my poor pair of glasses that always get thrown to the side each time a camera comes out. I used to wear contacts most of the time, but these days, I get a little lazy and just grab my glasses when heading out the door. If it’s time for a picture, however, I’ll quickly whip them off as I still prefer myself in photos when I’m glasses-free. One would think this means I would make the effort to wear my contacts more, but beyond a brief encounter at the mirror each morning, I rarely have to look at myself throughout the day. I think it’s because the glasses add age that I don’t particularly want added. This means, I’m typically a few years younger in my selfies than I normally appear in my day to day life.
One of the best things about selfies is that you can compose the shot to get just the right angle. Moving slightly this way or that to make sure the light hits your wrinkles in a more flattering way. Philippe has a horrible habit of taking photos of me from terribly unflattering angles. Most of the time, he’s simply trying out a new app or playing with his digital SLR and I happen to be the only subject within striking distance since the dog is upstairs snoring under a blanket. I’d love to think that every angle on me would be perfectly lovely, but sadly this isn’t the case. Some angles just look a bit off, which is a bit disturbing as one wonders if those are the primary angles that others might see all the time.
Perhaps this is why the idea of being on video scares me a bit. Too much moving around required and the possibility of showing the wrong side to the camera is imminent. It’s not like I have some horrible disfigurement or a conjoined twin that I’m attempting to conceal, it’s just that I don’t prefer the way I look at some angles. Age is doing nothing for my self esteem as I’m finding that I simply have fewer “acceptable” angles to choose from. For example, while gray hair can look distinguished, catch me in the wrong light and it looks more like I’ve been frightened by a poltergeist. To avoid these mishaps I tend to make sure that I only appear in posed photos. So, my favorite personal portraits will always be the compositions I can carefully craft myself while taking selfies.

I don’t want to laugh at you, but by your photo, you’re very attractive, glasses or contacts or plain-faced. You’re also very young (compared to me) But your glasses are really a cool color. I like the multiple shadows, hope that’s not what you see when you where them.
I dislike glasses as I can never get used to the feeling of them on my face and they always irritate me. But I also HATE photos of me, so you’ll find few of me anywhere. I’ve never taken a selfie. And thus, the turquoise avatar. LOL
hehe… thanks Sharon! 😃💕 Yeah… it’s just the strange addition of years in age that bugs me. Lol But thanks so much for the lovely compliment. You’re too sweet. I think you look fabulous in turquoise avatar! hehe
Oh, Charlie, I totally get it and feel the same as you about photos. However, rest assured that you are beautiful – or handsome 😉- inside and out!
hehe… that made me blush. Thanks, Carol! 😃💕 Yeah… I think seeing yourself in photos is often like hearing your voice on a recording. Just different than you imagined! Lol
Definitely! My recordings sound like Minnie Mouse or maybe Betty Boop, but I sing alto so something is definitely lost in the translation somewhere 😜
Ah, yes, I totally understand! 😉 I like to laugh but oh, how I dislike those “laugh lines” that are APPEARING weekly on my face! Lol! 😄 I guess we embrace the changes or buy really FABULOUS glasses… which I did! Haha! 😎
Thanks, Jill! 😃💕 I think laugh lines are the best thing in the end. If they’re appearing weekly, then that means you’re smiling a lot, which means life is pretty darn GREAT! 😉🎉hehe
Love those glasses with that great color. I’m like you, no bad selfies for me and then I accidentally took a good one that I can use for an avatar. It was a one in a million shot and I’m sure it will never happen again 😄😄😄
Thanks, Teri! 😃💕 Glad ya liked them! Yeah… Facebook keeps yelling at me to update my profile pic, but it’s a good one so I don’t want to risk a new one! 😊Lol
Boys and girls, it is not important a bit older, younger with or without glasses. If you have ‘that’ special something people are interested.
For me personal I have never thought in ages.
Besides some young people can be boring and some old people can be very interesting to look at and with their conversation!
Yes Charlie glasses can be lost, not funny If you are in a hurry but I am sure you look also handsome with the shiny glasses in your watercolor!
Awww thanks so much, Margriet! 😃💕 I’m definitely still a little boy on the inside when it counts the most! hehe… but yes to great conversation and being interesting! That’s the most important aspect of any person!
Age is a tricky thing, isn’t it? Nothing changes on the inside, but at some point the outside slowly (inevitably) starts to morph into someone we don’t fully recognize. Fortunately for YOU — at least judging from your avatar — you have nothing to worry about. (Unless you truly *are* hiding a conjoined twin? HA HA.) Great post, Charlie. And awesome glasses too!
Awww thanks, Heather!! 😃💕And my twin thanks you as well! Lol yeah…age has a way of creeping up on us doesn’t it? Luckily it’s the inside that counts and there I’m still quite young!! Hehe
These glasses are awesome and I totally understand how you feel about photos. I rarely take selfies and I shy away from friends taking pics of me. You make a good point about finding the right angle. It isn’t easy for everyone. Don’t worry your beauty shines through in your words, artwork and personality. I’m sure you look good with or without glasses. 😊😊😊
Awww thanks, Trav! 😃💕That’s so sweet of you to say! Yeah… everytime the cameras come out a get a little nervous! I didn’t used to, but now everything can be shared immediately! Lol Makes it worse somehow!
No problem. 😊. It’s also great to meet you.
Great to meet you as well! 😃
