Well, it finally happened and today, in the part of the world where I live. It’s officially the first day of spring! That said, it was actually a little overcast and chilly, but that didn’t stop me from celebrating it with this little newborn, for our prompt today. One can only hope he manages to grow into those feet. I suffered from a similar issue when I was going through grow spurts. It’s funny that our feet tend to grow first. I read once that we grow inward, with hands and feet first and then on to the arms and legs. Humans spend far more time in this gangly stage than any other animal, which is what made our teen years bizarre and confusing, yet oh so memorable. I can still remember earning the shoe size of a full-grown man while still feeling utterly like a confused teen. Thankfully, the other bits did manage to catch up to form some sort of proportion to it all. The arms didn’t quite get as big as I’d like, but that was simply a side effect of genetics. When at my goal weight, I’m simply described as trim. The word used to describe people without those bulky muscles that might nefariously change the silhouette of an otherwise perfectly formed popsicle.

As we head towards Easter, the stores are filled with various little baby chicks and candy ready to fill baskets and please lots of children. It strikes me that this little guy I illustrated is in the stance of that plastic chicken that delivers a single jelly bean. The one that kids will giggle about and refer to as a “pooping chicken” even though I’m quite sure it’s meant to be an egg. One of the most amazing versions of this product idea, though, came out while I was working at Hallmark – The Interactive Squawkin’ Egg Droppin’ Mama Hen! I still remember laughing out loud when watching the demo. It’s amazing and I totally recommend it! I’m sure this is probably meant to entertain children, but it’s equally for us kids at heart. Last year Philippe and I made each other Easter baskets, but this year, I’m not sure if the tradition will continue. It’s just all happening too soon and there’s little time to prepare. Also, I was still hoping that I could make my cherished Christmas Cake an Easter tradition as well and I’m not giving up on that dream.

But as the seasons shift and the thrill of the new hangs in the air, I’m rather excited. It’s time to shed old thoughts and cheer on some brand new thinking. A perfect time to dig into that list of dreams yet to be realized and pick one. Any one will DO! It actually never matters as long as you pursue it with all the passion you can muster. I have a list a mile long of things I’d love to do next, so it’s not likely I’ll be able to check off most of them. Yet I’m so excited to attempt just some of them and see where it takes me next. I hope that if you have a dream you’ve been setting aside for some time now, that you’ll be inspired to revisit it again as well. There’s really no harm in trying something that you want to do. Sure, it can fail and even fail miserably, but the simple act of doing is in itself a success. Most people never get that far. So if you’re in the process of doing something you truly love, congratulations. You’ve already succeeded. The world is new and alive again, ripe with infinite possibilities, like the first day of spring.

  1. Hubs won’t let me have chickens for the same reason he won’t let me have a dog: poop! Lol
I got to tell you, I was hoping that Xmas came recipe was in your cookbook! Every time I see the painting, I salivate!

    1. Your hubs has a real poop phobia it seems! LOL But yeah, most animals come with that problem. hehe And yeah, we didn’t include that cake because it’s actually a found recipe and not one that Philippe created. Though I’m quite sure he’ll have altered it plenty soon so we can include it in a future edition! 😉

  2. How sweet…so fluffy. Makes me want to cuddle him/her. Real, little chicks were a big deal years ago in all colors, sold at Easter time. My oldest sister had a green one that grew up to be a big rooster. My mom told me it kept chasing her and pecking at her feet so my dad gave it to a neighbor to raise. Jean was around 3 at the time and and my mom said she kept asking the neighbors if they got any green eggs yet.

  3. Love your chicken! I used to get pet chickens for Easter when I was a little girl. One chicken turned out to be a rooster. When he got older, he got very mean. My parents always knew when I got home from school because he would chase me around the outside of the house nipping at my heals. I would be circling the house calling out for him to stop! This went on for awhile but one day he was not there. Mom told me he went to live with the neighbors.

  4. Adorable painting. I actually spent my first day of Spring crafting yellow chicks with my preschool students and then coming home in a snow storm which is still thumping down now. We have a snow day from work and school today. Definitely doesn’t feel like Spring.

  5. Love your newborn chick!! It looks almost smug as if it knew something I don´t – maybe where all the lovely chocolate Easter eggs are buried! 😀 😉
And you´re so right – Easter has come upon as far too quickly! Wasn´t it just Christmas?! 😀 😂💕

    1. Thanks so much, Sarah! 😃💕 I thought it looked a bit like it might poop a jelly bean. Or just had that dare in its eye! LOL And yeah, it WAS just Christmas. Philippe and I were talking back then about pulling a couple traditions forward so we didn’t have to wait a full year, but now it seems like we’ve already run out of time.

  6. Oh my, I could have used this sunny post about 2 weeks ago, and every day thereafter.
I love the chick. I love remembering the hen that laid eggs (fifties version..plastic eggs,
wonder why we didn’t think of jelly beans hmmm) Anyway I love everything about this,
especially the Christmas cake for Easter. Having been hacked on 3/14 which gave the
hackers access to my bank account (which they seem to have enjoyed) then driving over
a curb on the 25th and enjoying all the perks of wrecking your car on a Sunday, I am
pleased to share I am back to blogging, all damages are repaired, and I’m feeling mighty

    1. Oh my goodness!! I’m so sorry to hear all of that! 😃💕 I actually stalked your last post as I noticed you had disappeared for awhile. I’m so sorry for all the crazy trauma, but thrilled you’re back! The world needs your words!! ❤️
