The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal, Venice

Decided to doodlewash my previous Venice sketch this is the result. I was super nervous when I started to add color as I was pretty fond of the sketch, but in the end, I actually like the color version better. I used the new colors in my palette that included Cotman Winsor & Newton Cadmium Orange. But I mainly got to feature my two super new colors from the higher end range of Winsor & Newton: Quinacridone Gold and Cobalt Teal, their professional watercolors. (Yeah… I totally snuck in a second color! Shhhhh!)

I used the gold for the first time in an earlier doodlewash, but hadn’t tried the teal yet. The Cobalt Teal provided the under wash of the water and the richer area at the top of the sky. I have to admit that the higher end colors produce some amazingly rich tones and now, of course, I’m craving more. But in the end, I’m going to wait and simply replace each tube one by one as a way of rewarding myself for continuing to doodlewash daily!

Love me some Quinacridone Gold, especially when I mix with Permanent Rose and paint old fashion roses…I should do that today :)! I like your “travel” sketches.
