Since I’m Irish and its St. Patrick’s Day, I thought there should be some sort of shout out to it for today’s uncommon creature. But Ireland didn’t seem to have uncommon creatures specific to that region that weren’t mythological, so I just found a rare green bird instead. This is a green broadbill that lives in the evergreen forests of Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, where it frequents lowland and lower montane rainforests. Like so many creatures in this month’s adventure, it’s listed as vunerable on the endangered species list as its numbers are in decline due to habitat loss.
This is technically an Asian lesser green broadbill and a male version because of the bright color and black markings. The actual name is Calyptomena viridis, which honestly sounds less like a bird and more like a sexually transmitted disease, so I stuck with green broadbill for this description. These birds are a minor group of the broadbill family and they are quiet, solitary fruit eaters that are chunky and small (around 6 inches/15cm). And honestly, that’s about all there was to discover about them as there seems to be very little written that I could find in my slap dash lightning quick research.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day! Unless you could care less about that event, in which case I hope you just had a wonderful regular day. But, if nothing else, it’s a good day to pay homage to green, and hopefully this little green bird fits the broadbill for this lucky day.

Happy St Patrick’s Day, Charles O! I’ve just realised I’m not wearing anything green, thank goodness I’m on this side of the pond and in an area where nobody seems to much care. 😉 And at least we won’t have to lower ourselves to pinching this little birdie, for he most certainly is kitted out in the right colour today – and absolutely beautiful greens they are too, marvellous stuff!
Thanks so much Jacob!! Hehe… “Pinch the birdie” …now there’s a euphemism that’s really cute!! Lol This little bird was the only green thing I could find since I’d just doodlewashed a frog. Hehe 😊
As daring as your bird is, green hasn’t exactly been a lucky color for it, has it? You got a gorgeous hue on him though…a brilliant green without being garish! <3
Thanks Teresa!! 😃💚 Yeah…green isn’t doing much for him with humans afoot. Glad you liked this! Green is such a difficult color to get right!
It really is, but it never seems to be a problem for you!
Good! As long as it doesn’t show! 😉hehe
The Green Broadbill is beautiful bird, I love the green shades. Beautifully Doodlewashed Charlie and Happy St. Pat’s Day.
Thanks Sharon!! 💚😃Glad you liked this! Happy St Patrick’s Day to you as well!!
You brought a green smile to my face and heart! Happy St. Patrick’s Day AND happy regular day! 🙂
Awww and I’m sure you looked lovely in your green smile my dear!! 💚😃 Yay! Hope both of yours days were wonderful as well!! Hehe
Seriously, you’re Irish?! Happy St. Paddy’s day Charlie, and don’t drink too much green beer (or champagne as the case may be)! And I’m sure they are celebrating in Borneo…
What?!!! They make green champagne?! Sign me up for that!! As it was I just had a regular glass of Guiness and called it good. Lol…I don’t party much these days 😊
Happy St. Patricks Day Charlie!
Thanks Susan!! 💚😃To you as well!!
Hope you are enjoying a pint of green beer, Charlie, O’friend! 🍀🍺🌈 Your green bird fits the bill for celebrating this fine day! Cheers! 🍷😜
Thanks so much Jill!! 😃💚 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! They didn’t have green beer where I went sadly…hehe… and I really do prefer red wine, which they’d have a devil of a time making green I’m sure! Lol
Oh, yes! I’d prefer red wine too! Lol! 🍀🍷🌟
Yay!! One day we’ll have a glass together!! 😉💚🍷🍷hehe
Sounds great!! 😃🍷👍
Cute! I like chunky birds 😀. Nice fresh looking sketch! Hey, how do you like the Pentalic? After much deliberation, I ordered one for my trip. Think it will be here tomorrow.
Hehe! Thanks Jessica!! 😃💚 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! And yay on the Pentalic! I love them…it’s all I use now. 300gsm and all cotton is hard to find in a sketchbook. Takes water really well and you can lift color without wrecking the page. Let me know how you like it!!!
Beautiful green bird! Happy St.Patrick’s Day 🙂
Thanks so much!! And Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you as well!! 😃💚
Charlie, you cracked me up with your thoughts on the scientific name of the bird! Happy St. Patty’s Day from this original McGill! ☘🍺💚🍻☘
Hehe…I should probably have an editor…I just sort of think as I type. 😊lol Thanks so much Carol!! 😃💚 Hope you had a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day!!
It takes a St Paddy’s day bird
to help spread the word
it’s not the color of skin
that determines what’s in
because that’s completely absurd
So if you’re chartreuse, or kelly green
tell others who may be mean
all colors, shapes and sizes
are God’s emerald prizes
that rock the human scene
Awww..: such a nice message in this pome! Love it Judy!! 😃💚
On occasion I can be nice . . . in public I often prefer spice.
Such a darling little bird! Your painting is lovely. Hope things get better for this fellow and his feathered kin. May your St. Patrick’s Day be happy and green.
Thanks so much Haunani!! 😃💚 yeah…here’s hoping this little creature sticks around for a long time!! Hope your day was wonderful as well!!
This green guy was perfect for your day. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Charlie.
Thanks so much Teri!! 😃💚Hope you had a wonderful day as well!
Happy st Patrick’s day for yesterday Charlie. Now that is a green, just perfect. Thought you may like to take a look at this link, http://animal-world.com/encyclo/birds/macaws/shamrock2.php
the shamrock macaw, with some stunning colours, it is a hybrid, so could be classed as unusual, but not in an odd looking way.
Thanks Rebecca!! 😃💚Hope you had a wonderful day yesterday! And thanks for the link…that’s cool….I love macaws. They’re sooo beautiful!!
