GUEST ARTIST: The Journey Of Ekaraj’s Watercolor

Hello all, My name is Ekaraj Worasamutprakarn (Ohn) and I’m from Bangkok, Thailand (follow me on Facebook and Instagram!). I’m a lecturer in the Department of Animation & Digital Media, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Thailand. My classes are Digital painting and Character design. Watercolor is so new for me, but I love to practice as much as I have a free time.

My watercolor journey began 3 years ago, when my office invited an art teacher to teach basic watercolor to me and my colleague for a few days and I found that watercolor was an interesting and challenging medium because, unlike digital painting, it could not be redone. It was totally different.

Then I tried to find others who were interested in watercolor. I found Bangkok Sketchers group on Facebook and joined them to sketch around my city. This kind of activity inspired me to paint everywhere I visited.

I also prepared a special class for my students to go out and sketch together. It was such a funny and happy time. For sketching, sometimes I use ink-brush.

The first solo traveling of mine was in Europe. I also brought my watercolor to sketch too. That time, I thought I was crazy because the other mind told me that I should not spend time too much time to paint like this. I should go out for adventure and see more places.

The good thing in joining the group of sketchers was that I met many artists who were so great in their own style in various medium such as pen, ink, wash and also traditional watercolor. Especially watercolor. I was impressed how they could capture the light and shadow so lively. They became great friends of mine and I regarded some of them as my idols since then. I followed them to painting trips in many places, both Thailand and other countries, and that was an important key in developing my skill.

In the picture’s below, I went to paint in Vietnam in 2016. It was my first international group exhibition too. So, it was such a good memory. In the year later, I went to Nepal to join my second group exhibition. It was a greatest time with my idols.

In the future, I hope I can be a good watercolorist. As for now, due to my full time work as a lecturer, watercolor is just a hobby which I paint as much as 1-2 pieces a week. Here are some steps of my artworks and I hope it will be useful to you.

  1. Ekaraj, your artwork is gorgeous. I’m impressed with how much you capture of each scene, often in tiny paintings yet with identifying details and atmospheric perspective well rendered. The quality of your art enchants me.
