Next up, we have some blueberry cheesecake as I continue to practice my food illustration while also following our prompts for the April challenge this month. When it comes to “puddles” and spring food my first thought went to another form of art known as plating. That wondrous ability that chef’s have to transform a plate and make those little sauce puddles land in exactly the right spot. When it comes to sketching, however, I need to practice my plating. My strawberry cheesecake I painted a few weeks ago looked less like a culinary masterpiece and more like a crime scene, so I wanted to give it go again and remove the plate entirely. I’m impressed when someone makes food taste amazing and even more impressed when they can deliver it with a sense of visual artistry as well. I was going to paint a fully plated dinner with little pools of sauce, but got hungry and distracted, which for my regular readers should be no surprise at all. So, you get cheesecake, and a full apology if anyone is currently trying to diet.
For those who missed my previous post, I just launched a new section of Doodlewash® called Freshly Curious. This section contains free reference photos for artists to use in drawing, sketching, painting, collage, or whatever else comes to mind. And for writers and poets to use on their blogs if they see something that might help illustrate their post or provide inspiration for a story. All I ask is for a small credit and link back to this site. I honestly hadn’t looked at these photos in years and it seemed strange to have them hanging out in cyberspace doing no good whatsoever. I hope you’ll find them helpful and apologies for mentioning it again, but I’ve learned that twice is nice to make sure everyone gets the message! And truthfully, I had to stop thinking of food for a paragraph, as I’m starving for dessert now and about to rush out the door and buy a cake somewhere.
As for painting so much food lately, I’m trying to practice one genre of sketching for a bit and food is my absolute favorite. Well, along with beverages since they often come in wonderfully reflective glassy objects, my other favorite thing to paint. I’ll likely bust out of this and try something else as the month goes along, but I’ve learned that if I don’t paint what I really love, than I’m less likely to enjoy it. And since I’ve had a bit less time these days as my day job is getting rather busy, painting what I love is more important than ever! It’s a beautiful way to unwind at the end of the day and get lost in making things I enjoy come to life on paper. Trying to explain how I feel each day is sometimes difficult and often I’m not sure what to ramble on about at all. This is likely one of those days. On days like this, I just get a little bit lost in the process, finding a strangely comforting feeling in the joy of blueberry puddles.

Your paintings so often make me hungry. This one makes me crave cheesecake. Delicious stuff.
Thanks, Laura! 😃💕 Yay! Then it worked… I’m always thrilled to know when these sketches make people hungry. That means it worked! hehe
Yum!! Beautiful!!
Thanks so much!! 😃💕
This blueberry puddler is a delightful painting, and a real challenge to enjoy at 11:30 PM as there is nothing like this in the house, I’m not really hungry, I shouldn’t be eating this cheesecake anyway, anytime, so I’m just going to drool all over the computer and hope that doesn’t add pounds to my hips but only pounds in my heart as I slurp up this visual yumminess.
hehe… thanks, Sharon! 😃💕 And for the record…. I’m pretty sure that drooling is calorie free. In fact you might even lose some calories, like eating celery!😉 lol
Yummy
Thanks so much! 😃💕
That is a wonderful painting, Charlie. It makes me feel hungry even though I’ve just finished breakfast! Splendid.
Aww thanks, Michael!! 😃💕 I’m so glad you liked it!!
Looking yummy..😋
Thanks! 😃💕 So happy you liked it!
Really gorgeous also. The colours are intense. More purple than purple, more purple than real blueberries!
Thanks so much! 😃💕 Yeah… I like to pump the colors a bit! hehe… makes things feel a bit more fantasty. Which this one was, as I don’t have any cheesecake, but only wish I did! lol
Darn it, Charlie; how am I supposed to lose weight when you keep painting these beautifully delicious foods?! 😉 <3
haha! Awww, thanks Teresa! 😃💕 Sharon had the solution… just drool! And it’s totally free of caloric intake! LOl
I, for one, missed your previous post about your new section. Thanks for mentioning it again.
Aww good! Yeah, I sometimes forget that I need to repeat things a few times. It’s silly to assume people read my rambles daily! 😊 hehe
