Though I pretty much love all types of frozen treats, our prompt for today, ice cream in just about any form is still one of my favorites. Blended into a shake and it becomes a sweet drink of epic proportions. My favorite version of this lovely treat comes in the strawberry variety, topped with whipped cream and served with a bendy straw. As a kid, I wanted every drink to come with a bendy straw as they’re just super fun, actually quite practical, and I was convinced they tasted better that way. Also, it allowed me to stare out into the distance, imagining anything at all, while slowly enjoying drinking a little taste of heaven. Of course, in my enthusiasm I always sucked up too much of the stuff at once and was stunned into a brief, yet perfectly electrifying “brain freeze.” Being young, it was not only worth the risk, but also the exquisitely uncomfortable buzz was usually the centerpiece of the fun. Watching all your friends stagger about holding their foreheads was a giggle-inducing experience that never failed to make us happy. Showing restraint is not really a trademark of youth.

Even today, on the now rare occasions that I actually have a shake, I’ll sometimes let myself go a bit and the brain freeze returns. And even with all adults around, it’s still stupidly funny. At least with the people I hang out with, anyway. There are those among us who have fully grown up and stopped this sort of childish behavior. They sort of confuse me, so I tend to hang out with the other crowd. I just don’t like the idea that there’s a “correct way” to do something, and that everything should always be done in that fashion. It’s a bore. When I was young, all the fun came from challenging the norms a bit or at least finding out what’s just on the other side. It wasn’t about trying to be rebellious, it was simply about curiosity. Wondering what would happen if things were done just a bit differently than that normal way everyone was doing them. That feeling of “what if…?” has thankfully stayed with me into adulthood. So, while I’ll happily try anything someone wants to show me, I’ll more than likely bend it into submission and make it my own in the end.

There’s a moment when an idea hits that’s one of the greatest moments of all. A time when everything sort of clicks together and a new path is revealed. Time seems to stop and there’s nothing else the brain can focus on. It just sort of freezes there. This has always been one of my favorite moments and probably why I’ve only had creative jobs throughout my life. I’m not sure I could even do those other types of jobs “correctly.” So many times our brains get filled with things that aren’t very fun at all. Worries and feelings of inadequacy, that seem to be the trademark of turning into an adult. But if you suspend your grown up disbelief for just a moment, you’ll start to see magical things that may be new or just something beautifully familiar from childhood. As you giggle at yourself for those crazy little thoughts in your head, take an extra moment to really think about them. Imagine sucking on that bendy straw of an ice cream shake and staring out into the distance. There’s a truth there that’s waiting to be embraced. A world of possibilities brought about by taking just a little moment away from our adult thinking to truly experience the joy of brain freeze.

  1. I always tell people that I skipped being an adult and just went from childhood to second childhood. Maybe that’s why I really want brain freeze right now – if it meant I could have a shake as pretty as yours! Yeahhhh!

  2. I remember brain freeze well. I also remember ice lollies that were so cold your tongue would stick to them, and ‘clackers’ (you’ve got me going off into a reverie now). Bits of card that we attached to the rear frame of our bike with a clothes peg whilst the cardboard protruded through the spokes of our wheel and made a terrificly loud noise – not unlike the large exhausts of teenagers cars.from slightly later in our so-called development as males of the species.

    1. Oh wow! What a fun memory! Totally know about those clackers! They did make a surprisingly loud noise. Never quite understood why people need to signal that they’re moving about. I tend to prefer to move around hoping to be unnoticed. 😊

  3. Sometimes I saw here people adult shipping these thing in winter i feel shivering to see them.but when you remind the kids same we were. Good frzing wheped cone lolly.nice painting as well.
    Charlie I love it. thanks.

  4. Nice shake and I love the straw. Managed a brain freeze yesterday while walking through the zoo, following a 7 and 9 year old while sipping my favorite coffee iced drink,. The brain freeze ow! was immediately followed by a giggle.hehehe

  5. Loved this post and what you said really resonates with me. Sometimes it’s nice as an adult to experience moments like that which happened all the time when we were kids. In adult form I actually got a brain freeze last week from one of the beer slushies I made lol.

  6. I have found that mixing pineapple juice in a blender with frozen pineapple chunks until it is a mass of creamy ice will give you a brain freeze that mimics a milkshake.
I had one for lunch and it worked beautifully! I love the way your mind (and your paint brush) works!!

  7. Mmm!! Chocolate malts are my weakness! You would like it here, I think, where my small town has an ice cream stand in a trailer! It is only open in the summer and has both walk up and drive up windows. Once in a while in the hot weather I’ll have a hankerin’ for an icy treat and hubs will run to town to get me one.
