Today we have another quick little doodlewash (pencil sketch straight to watercolor) of a cool little character from Toy Story. This is Rex, and he was a request from Jacob over at Jaywalks. Although I was out of college when this movie first came out, I still remember seeing it in the theater and loving it. It was like a wonderful affirmation that toys really do coming to life when you leave the room. I knew it!
The movie was really fun at any age as long as you had a bit of that child inside left over to play along. I had more than my far share of inner child so I adored it. Although the main characters were really Woody and Buzz Lightyear, I preferred all of the characters who were animals best. Like Rex here, the adorable little coward. But no matter what the toy was, the fact that it was coming to life made the experience truly magical. It was something we always talked about as kids and nothing we could ever actually prove.
Though many sequels came after, the first movie is still my favorite and a classic. I love Pixar movies and this one had all the wonderful elements that make their movies shine above the rest. I’m still running super short on time, so I’ll keep this one brief. Instead of rambling on at you, I’ll just let you go back in time and enjoy that moment when your favorite toys magically sprang to life. A time when anything was possible and the only limit was your imagination.

I loved all the Toy Story movies, especially the third! Even though these are kids’ movies, I think there were adult friendly too. I was touched that the last movie was about all the forgotten toys once the kids grow up. These movies are so well done!
Rex is adorable! And I keep hearing his voice!
Thanks Kari!! 💕😃Yeah, that’s what I love about Pixar movies. They really do work for adults too! More so than Disney, but I love those too! Hehe 😊
So I didn’t just sit laughing hysterically at my e-mails for ten minutes or anything. Not at all. Eeeeeeeeek! Day made, already, at pushing 2AM. He’s the greatest! You got the adorable, goofy smile perfectly! Thank you so much – I can’t believe you actually did it, Charlie! Ugh, there are no words that can adequately describe my love for this. <3 <3 <3 I feel I should draw something for you now.
Toy Story 1 is definitely my favourite. Toy Story 3 was the first film I went to see in 3D (and I think probably the last! I'm not sure I've even been to the cinema since then!) which was an experience, watching the people before us trying to catch balls and avoid speeding trains 😛 but such comedy didn't knock the original off its perch.
Awww… Yay!! I’m so happy you liked him Jacob! Happy early birthday! 😉❤️I guess I should have waited until the end of the month but after you suggested it I just couldn’t wait. 😊hehe. I’m thrilled you like him…wasn’t sure if I could get everything right and didn’t want to disappoint!
Oh, you definitely didn’t disappoint! It’s so adorable, I love it. Thanks for the early birthday wishes! Someone’s eager! 😉 I’m putting early money on this being the best present 😉 not much can beat Rex, after all. <3
I wonder when is it your birthday? I must note this down and prepare something monumental for such an occasion… 😉
Awww…lets hope you get something even cooler than this! At least something tangible you can play with. 😉hehe
Yes indeedy – like a Rex toy? 😉 And you didn’t answer my question 😛 I can see I’m going to have to just assume every day is your birthday from now on until I finally get it right!
Haha! I was moving too quickly… and missed the question I guess. Although now I don’t want to say as every day being my birthday is awesome!! Lol But okay…mine is April 13. You may buy me that pony
HAPPY BIR.. oh, it’s not for a little while yet. Thank goodness – I was worried you were going to say tomorrow or something. Mental note made 😉
Haha… Good…put it on the calendar!! 😉👍🏻
Great choice! My son was just the right age when Toy Story came out so I was lucky enough to watch it over and over again guilt free. He also had all the toys including Buzz, Woody and a remote control RC Car.
Thanks Nancy!! 💕😃And cool you liked this movie too. Hehe! I don’t have kids and still watch these movies. I’m determined to just stay a kid forever!! Lol
I see no problem with that…
I think they still do spring to life!
That green is just delicious. And what a face! (K)
Yay! They do, right?! Thanks Kerfe! 💕😃 Tried out a new green I stole from Philippe’s palette for this one. Hehe
Rex!!! Like Kari, I loved all 3 Toy Story movies! They’re the best kind of movies to watch with the kids because they’ve got both kid and adult humor. Your Rex is as cute as the one in the movies! <3
Awww thanks, Teresa! 💕😃 Glad ya liked my Rex and also that you loved these movies too! They’re so fun, aren’t they?! Hehe
Very fun!
That is the best green, so shiny and luscious. A perfect Rex.
Thanks so much, Teri! 💕😃Tried a new green on this one. Hehe
It really is perfect!! Are you one of Santa’s elves?! Fess up Charlie! :))))
Shhhhh!! Stop giving away my secrets!! 😳 Lol Thanks, Laura!! 💜😃 I wish I were one of Santa’s elves as that sounds like the coolest thing ever!!!!
I think you’re a secret agent 💜
Yes…but let’s just keep that our little secret 😉💚
so awesome! recognized rex right away! love him.
Thanks Jodi! ❤️😃 Hehe… he was fun to doodlewash. Made me want to go back and watch all the movies!
Cool and beautiful green Rex. The Toy Story movies is also one of my favorites. Great post!
Thanks Sharon!! 💕😃Glad you liked this…I feel super rushed lately. Wasn’t sure if Rex was going to make it! Hehe So happy join enjoyed him!
Love Rex! YAY Charlie! 💖💕💜 You amaze me with your “quick” doodlewashes! I really liked Toy Story probably because it made me feel like a kid again. Thanks for making me smile! 😄
Awww you’re so sweet! 💕😃 Thanks Jill! Yeah Toy Story was awesome. I love imagining that toys are real!! Hehe
Brilliant, Charlie! That one where the boy grew up and the toys were left behind was heart-breaking.
Thanks Michael!! 😃 And I know! That was Toy Story 3! It was so sad.
You have really figured out how to show dimensionality with your color. Bravo.
Thanks! My trick is overdoing it! Lol…seriously… Instead of drawing what I see I squint at the subject and whatever is darkest, I just add a lot of dark to those areas. I know watercolor is typically flatter but I love dimensionality! 😊
Well now. That is sort of fascinating. I’m going to try that!
Cool! 😃👍🏻 I’ve got Philippe squinting too…I’m sure it’s not good for wrinkles, but it works!! Lol
Great Rex Charlie 😊 Pixar definitely make the best of the Disney films.
Thanks Tori!! 💕😃And glad you’re a Pixar fan as well!
Rex is super cool, as is Sap Green! This is such a happy post. I remember how much I loved Toy Story too! Very uplifting Charlie!
Thanks Cathe!! 😃💕 He was fun to doodlewash. Made me want to watch all the movies again!
