Written by Between yesterday and today, I’ve been traveling for work and have been in 5 planes and 2 rental cars, finally landing in SoCal for the next few days. With such a crazy schedule, finding time to paint was rather challenging, so I opted for some quick urban sketching. Philippe and I stopped to have a salad before racing to board the last plane to Santa Ana and these shiny salt and pepper shakers caught my eye. This wasn’t the type of picnic I enjoyed as a child, but as an adult it seems to be the more common. The weather is lovely here compared to the cooler temperatures I left behind, so it still felt like a lovely picnic indeed! As a kid, the food would have most likely been a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but tonight it was simply salad and a glass of wine. I’m thrilled that we’ve finally ended up in the same place for a few nights now so that was something worth celebrating. Next, I’ll be racing off to bed and hopefully have a little chance to sleep in tomorrow.
While I do love traveling, getting there can often be exhausting and disorienting. I’m still a bit jet lagged and not even sure what time it is, but this post is probably appearing at a time when most of you are sleeping. I hope you’re having sweet dreams and I hope to do the same shortly! I’m probably crazy to even attempt to make a post, but I’m always determined to show up for the challenge, no matter what. This is the habit that has turned into a full on addiction. But it always feels so wonderful when I sneak in that little bit of time to sketch and paint. That said, writing a full post is probably a bit too ambitious considering I’m about to fall asleep, so I’ll cut this short, meet you here again tomorrow, and leave you with this little sketch of my urban picnic.

You’re in Santa Ana? You are fifteen miles from my house! Great job on the salt and pepper shakers – they are ubiquitous. I love that you got the dented caps and all the reflected colors. Even on the fly, you do a great job, Charlie.

This is a pretty time of year in So Cal, especially at the beach. We were at Laguna Beach a few weeks ago, my granddaughter having a great time playing in the freezing surf while dolphins leaped past. If you’re still in San Clemente, eat at Sonny’s, a wonderful family owned Italian restaurant – 429 North El Camino Real. Also plenty of bars and bistros along Del Mar. And you must walk out to the pier where if you look back toward the north end of the city, you can see the condo my parents owned. Stick around for the 4th of July to see a fabulous fireworks show off the end of the pier.
Oh wow! The fireworks would be awesome! We actually ended up at a little bistro called Vine Restaurant & Bar which was fabulous. Portions were surprisingly large though so we didn’t have room for dessert! 😥

I love the shakers. Funny, I remember the tops being not so straight, looking a bit bent and used. You captured that perfectly along with the wonderful shine. I hope with all the business you are doing in California you will
