As we close this month of natural beauty, my mind shifted to golden sunsets and the beauty that comes just before the day ends. So we have one last little experimental doodlewash for this month. Photographers refer to the time just before sunset as the “golden hour.” It’s that brief period of time when everything seems to glow with the yellows, reds, and oranges you’d find in the fiery brilliance of a brick of pure gold. I love that nature reminds you that you’ve just witnessed a show each day by making a spectacle of light just before the curtain of darkness falls again. It’s a gorgeous reminder that we’re all simply members of the cast in this wondrous show. Every creature whether large, small or microscopic has a part to play in creating a unique and harmonious ensemble. Humans aren’t the star of this production, but indeed, it’s quite often tough to get them to understand that.
It’s been a wonderful month of trying new things and enjoying the natural world around us all. I’ve learned a lot, not just about painting, but also nature itself. There are so many mysteries to uncover that it would take more than a month to do them justice. Actually, I feel the same about watercolor! But it makes me stop and think about this gift of a world we’ve been given and how we all need to work together to keep things moving along as they should. Every living being has an important role to play each day, and it’s awesome to consider just how much happens in the world during each sunrise and sunset. Not the horrible political astrocities that man creates, but the beautiful things that have always existed all around us. These are the things that give us life and give us hope. The things that will live on long after us if we can only open our hearts and minds to let them.
As we move on to a new month and new adventure in March, I hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour of the natural beauty around us. Life can get a little bit hectic and sometimes it difficult to know where this world is actually headed next. But one thing is certain. With just a little bit of hope and a lot of imagination, we can change the way we feel. When life seems sad, we can paint happiness. When there seems to be only darkness, we can paint light. This, like nature, is also a beautiful gift. I know I’m always the crazy optimist, but no matter what happens, I still believe in all of us. We can make the world a better place by painting joy into it. Standing together with brushes and pens in our hands, we can create the world we’d like to see. One filled with beauty and light. Where each day, we see and appreciate the natural world around us. Making each minute matter and every moment count. And smiling as we know that they’ll always be tomorrow after that lovely moment when the sun says farewell.
