World Watercolor Month – Day 18 – Painting With Friends

As I looked at the prompt of “furry friends” today, I first thought of a dog, as I’m very much a dog lover. They are definitely a wonderful friend to have! How I ended up with a chihuahua holding a paint brush in its mouth is anyone’s guess, really. As we head into the second half of this phenomenal month, I’m enjoying having a bit of fun by painting things I normally wouldn’t think to try. And I’m thrilled and excited to be painting with so many friends across the globe for World Watercolor Month! You inspire me daily with the beautiful work you are posting every minute and are making me want to try new things. Together, we are definitely showing the world that watercolor is an amazing medium. Keep on painting what you love and having a blast in the process! Don’t worry if you don’t manage to paint each day, just keep right on painting and tagging your watercolors with #WorldWatercolorMonth to join our big little global celebration!

I’ve never owned a chihuahua, but think they’re rather cute. I’ve already painted nearly all of the dogs I’ve had in real life. From my very first companion, to the first dog I had as an adult, to my current little bitchy basenji. I say that last bit with all the fondness in the world as I rather appreciate his strong personality. It’s really entertaining. Each of these dogs is so different and yet they all share that uncanny ability to break my heart. They don’t stay around forever, so I cherish each little moment, and think about them long after they’re gone. Each time one passes, I tell myself I won’t go through that again and then end up with another. The truth is, something doesn’t have to last forever in order to be important. Sometimes, even the briefest of moments can become that thing you hold dear for years to come. Thankfully, our memories tend to prefer the good times and those become the stories we remember most. The ones that make us smile, even if it’s through tears. It’s what makes our own short time on this little green planet so beautiful.

And thanks for joining in one of the most beautiful months of the year! By the way, this little dog is holding a Princeton Velvetouch™ brush, so at least we know he has good taste. The soft feel of these brushes is really amazing! Princeton was on my mind today as they just launched a cool new World Watercolor Month giveaway for people who use their brushes which you can read more about by clicking here! And there are four additional giveaways running at this very moment from our awesome sponsors, which you can find on the official giveaways page (be sure to check the rules to determine your eligibility by location). And as if that’s not enough, I also have something wonderful to give some of you right now! Today, I have American Journey Artists’ Watercolor Nomad Sets (if you haven’t yet received one) for the first 10 people who comment on doodlewash.com with the phrase “Let’s All Paint Together!” Be sure to look for my response on these as if you get one, I’ll be asking for your address by replying to your comment. It’s an incredible month and there are still many days to go! I hope each of you are enjoying a fabulous month of watercolor that’s made even better by painting with friends!

  1. Let’s All Paint Together! Though, I wouldn’t trust my chihuahua with a paint brush. 😛 She’d probably just splatter the cat with paint.

  2. Let’s all paint together! I love looking at everyone’s work each evening, the gallery was a great idea, Charlie! Your doggy with the paintbrush is very sweet! Thanks for everything!

    1. Aww thanks so much, Dale! I’m so glad you liked it! It was fun to see the gallery form on Facebook, but left out my Instagram folks and other social networks, so this year has been fun to see!! Glad you liked my dog! hehe 😃💕 I’ll have Cheap Joe’s send you a sample!

  3. Look at the eyes on this little guy! Beautiful – I call them Hershey’s Kisses eyes. And holding his paintbrush, ready to go. I own a bunch of Princeton watercolor brushes – they’re really nice as they hold a good amount of paint and keep their shape, as long as I’m nice to them. I used to remind my students that paintbrushes need a Mohawk hairdo, not a splayed mess like they’ve been wrassled by alligators. But maybe all they really need is a sweet puppy to take good care of them.

  4. You already have me down for one. Thank you. Love the puppy. You made him have such a sweet little face. Have you tried using the Princeton filbert grainer? It is an interesting looking brush.

  5. Your puppy perfectly exemplifies the joyous spirit you are spreading around of “Let’s all paint together!” Thanks so much for your uplifting posts!

  6. What a sweet pup! I just adopted a puppy yesterday to give my current adult dog a little buddy. Each dog is so unique! Love the expression on your pup’s face. So cute holding the paintbrush for the sketch – two of your favorite things!

  7. My cats like to rub their faces on the end of my paintbrush while I am trying to use it, they also try to bite it. And when I leave a painting on the table to dry, I will come back and find a cat lying on top of it, or walking across it. I love them so much!

  8. Oh Charlie this little cutie you painted it is exactly the portrait of a lovely tea cup chihuahua we had, her name was Sandy she passed at the age of 15 in 2014 I see her in your painting! My painting for today is a tribute too to my Dutch Bunny, passed in June is a emotional and meaningful painting that we all can relate with. We will always carry our lost loving pets in an embrace inside our heart no matter how much time passes! Keep up with the beautiful creations! <3 <3 <3

    1. Aww I’m sending you a big virtual hug, Carolina!! 😃💕💕 Pet make our lives so wonderful and yet can always break out hearts. Carry that love forever! It’s the most beautiful thing in the world!
