Day 22 - World Watercolor Month - Colors Of Summer Beach Drink - Doodlewash

World Watercolor Month – Day 22 – The Colors Of Summer

For today’s doodlewash, I decided to get a bit experimental by skipping my pen and simply doing a quick sketch with a brush and watercolor in answer to the “colors of summer” prompt for today. This made things look a bit blurry, like squinting into the sun surrounded by waves of heat, or simply having one too many of these drinks. Either way, it was a fun experiment to see what would happen. Just 9 more paintings to go for World Watercolor Month and it’s been a fun month indeed. If you haven’t made it over to look at the official gallery, then stop reading this drivel and go check it out immediately! So many wonderful paintings there and it’s been amazing to watch new ones show up every few minutes. Today, summer has decided to show off a bit by bringing insane heat. According my weather app, it feels like 112F (45C), which, with the high humidity makes walking outdoors feel like walking into someone’s mouth. So, I’ve spent the day hiding safely inside my house.

I’ve never been a fan of the heat, and honestly prefer colder weather. I think it’s because I tend to run warm and don’t really enjoy sweating. Or, more likely, the little kid in me loves fall and winter because it means we’re getting closer to Christmas! When I was a kid, the summers were never this hot, a side effect of our warming planet. But not much would stop me from playing outdoors back then. Hopping on my bike to head off and explore was a blast. And those summer days, with no school or homework, were each like a little gift. As an adult, the weekends are similar and I’ve been enjoying this one in spite of the heat. On days like this, when it seems I have plenty of time to do things, I tend to get distracted easily and end up getting not much at all done. I nearly forgot what time it was and realized I better paint something quick! It was fun to just splash some paint around and play, like I was that little kid again, making the most of summer break.

This evening, a dear friend is coming over, so I’ll be signing off soon. But, before I go, I would be remiss not to share some lovely gifts with you! For today, I once again have that little metal palette you see next to the World Watercolor Month logo. This is a Joe Miller Travel Painter Palette with a round sable brush, and I have 10 of them for anyone who hasn’t yet been awarded one. Simply comment directly below on doodlewash.com and add the phrase “Paint Every Day!” to let me know you’d like one. I think that daily painting is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just seeing the small improvements over time, it’s equally the feeling that you can let yourself play and not worry about creating something “perfect.” For me, it’s just indulging in a wonderful little habit that enriches my day and makes me feel good. Whether I’m carefully creating something when I have a little extra time, or quickly splashing around paint with a burst of exuberance, like a little boy, simply enjoying the colors of summer.

    1. Your drink looks wonderfully thirst quenching. Too much heat can be so draining, unless all one need do is enjoy your array of refreshments!!! Blitz, with his furry Shepherd body surely agrees and is loving the basement we’ve recently moved into. Enjoy your evening!!!

  1. The fact that you’ve inspired me to “paint every day” has changed my summer radically. I’ve learned a ton – not least of which is my new favorite phrase “walking into someone’s mouth” HAHAHA! I’ve always looked for a way to describe our blazing hot and humid days here. (which are all of them) so thanks for that!!! 😀

  2. My six year old and I have been trying to Paint Every Day! Its such a fun thing for us to do together, and it gives us some time to quietly be together without screens or crazy busyness!

  3. …and don’t press “send” too soon when you comment!
This community gives me encouragement and prodding – just when I need it. Thanks to all from a VERY new artist (been drawing and painting since September 2016 at the ripe old age of 65+). I’m as happy as I have ever been.

  4. I’m not sure what kind of drink is lolling about in that pretty glass, but it looks delicious. The shadow is great with the reflected colors. I’m also not a high heat lover, but walking in the shade or lazing under an umbrella are pretty decent summer activities.

You’ve noted often how wonderful it is to see all the work posted on the Doodlewash Gallery, and I wanted to mention how much I’ve been enjoying all your talented guest artists. It’s like wandering through a museum. Love it!

    1. Aww thanks so much, Sharon! 😃💕 And isn’t it?? We’ve built keep a unique and lovely salon here on Doodlewash. I’m guessing by now it’s the largest dedicated gallery of watercolor artists in the world! Yay!

  5. The lack of pen certainly makes the temperature soar a few degrees, and makes this stylish tipple all the more desirable! It escalated to an unwelcome 29C here a few days ago, but now we’re back to the more usual 19s and 20s which is a tremendous relief. Stay cool 😉

    1. Ugh… you’re just bragging! LOL I WANT those temperatures!! 40 is not a livable environment!! LOL And thanks, Jacob! 😃💕 Glad you liked this one. I have to admit that I do like a little bit of pen edge, but I think it works to add that haze of heat!

  6. I would like that beautiful drink right now. It’s 80 degrees at 7 am and so humid. I’m not a fan of hot weather as well…………Hate this hot humid summer we are having. I’m so happy to have found your blog as I have been in a painting drought for 3 months. Hoping for inspiration to get started again. #painteveryday

    1. Awesome!! So happy you found Doodlewash! Yes, to painting every day…. it’s soooo much FUN! And yeah, I’m already ready for fall! lol 😃💕 And I’m all out of samples today, but check back each day!

  7. Charlie your words are filled with vibrant colors! They are so energetic everytime! Yeah painting everyday gives liberty to play with colors and indeed improvement is noticed itself❤ Happy Painting 🎨 Worldwatercolor Month is a celebration like Christmas in July😊 Keep growing, Keep inspiring💕

  8. hahaha! “Like walking into someone’s mouth.” That will keep me giggling for days. Your doodle-less drink really does look like it’s shimmering in the summer heat – well done! What a fun experiment.
