Written by After seeing today’s prompt of “cherry, lemon, & turquoise” from my lovely friend Angela Fehr, I was so happy because these are three of my most favorite colors. Well, versions of these, at least, that I prefer in quinacridone red or rose, gamboge, and cobalt teal or turquoise. One of our official sponsors for World Watercolor Month, Da Vinci Paint Co., asked me what my three favorite colors were and I said these. So I just happened to have three tubes of paint to play with for today’s quick little doodlewash. My previous attempt using only these three colors showed off the individual colors a bit more, but I love the range you can get from just a few colors. Today’s drink is completely made up so I have no idea what you’d taste if you attempted to sip through that straw. Something fruity and tropical, I assume, with just a hint of alcohol to keep things festive. Either way, this was a fast and fun experiment that I enjoyed making. That, in the end, is the most important thing of all!
Though my style is rather realistic, it’s equally a crazy mess of color splashing and letting watercolor do its thing. When I start a doodlewash, I have a picture in my mind of what I want it to look like, but watercolor does as well. So we just dive in and create what amounts to an artistic compromise. I imagined my drink to have a bit more cherry flavoring, but watercolor was thirsty for orange. Perhaps a bit of mango, which I myself am allergic to and would never think to add to a drink. The result, is absolutely never what I set out to make, and that’s the exact reason why I find watercolor so enthralling. If you know what’s going to happen next, things could all get a bit boring. Watercolor makes sure that you’re consistently surprised, often pleasantly, and other times sadly, but it’s always guaranteed to be an exciting experience! In the end, it’s the actual experience that matters most and not the final outcome. I’d much rather have a blast creating something so-so than bored to tears, even if the end result was a masterpiece. Although that’s a perfectly subjective and completely undefinable term.

This is a creative mashup for sure. I don’t drink alcohol but even I know you don’t drink alcohol with a straw. So maybe this is a lemonade iced tea, something I enjoy on a hot day, and maybe you do also. The fun of summer drinks is trying something new and the fun of watercolor is painting that moves by its own impulses. The drink looks festive – I imagine it tastes terrific!

Well I always have fun here! I call this combo my holy trinity. LOVE these colors. Re: the mango allergy? Do you have a latex allergy? Mango is cross reactive, as is pineapple and kiwi and a few other things. I feel for you as I have some food allergies that make me sad, like walnuts and some latex derivatives. but at least we can paint them 🙂

Not knowing how things will turn out is why I enjoy watercolours too. I “Always Have Fun!” when I paint, I think that’s why I can’t paint commercially.

I love your description of your interaction with watercolor. What I say is that “I’m busy painting in the middle of the picture and it’s busy working on the bottom” The majority of watercolors I make have minimal pre-planning, and lots of spontaneous action
