Day 25 - World Watercolor Month - A Mysterious Concoction - Cherry Lemon Turquoise - Doodlewash

World Watercolor Month – Day 25 – A Mysterious Concoction

After seeing today’s prompt of “cherry, lemon, & turquoise” from my lovely friend Angela Fehr, I was so happy because these are three of my most favorite colors. Well, versions of these, at least, that I prefer in quinacridone red or rose, gamboge, and cobalt teal or turquoise. One of our official sponsors for World Watercolor Month, Da Vinci Paint Co., asked me what my three favorite colors were and I said these. So I just happened to have three tubes of paint to play with for today’s quick little doodlewash. My previous attempt using only these three colors showed off the individual colors a bit more, but I love the range you can get from just a few colors. Today’s drink is completely made up so I have no idea what you’d taste if you attempted to sip through that straw. Something fruity and tropical, I assume, with just a hint of alcohol to keep things festive. Either way, this was a fast and fun experiment that I enjoyed making. That, in the end, is the most important thing of all!

Though my style is rather realistic, it’s equally a crazy mess of color splashing and letting watercolor do its thing. When I start a doodlewash, I have a picture in my mind of what I want it to look like, but watercolor does as well. So we just dive in and create what amounts to an artistic compromise. I imagined my drink to have a bit more cherry flavoring, but watercolor was thirsty for orange. Perhaps a bit of mango, which I myself am allergic to and would never think to add to a drink. The result, is absolutely never what I set out to make, and that’s the exact reason why I find watercolor so enthralling. If you know what’s going to happen next, things could all get a bit boring. Watercolor makes sure that you’re consistently surprised, often pleasantly, and other times sadly, but it’s always guaranteed to be an exciting experience! In the end, it’s the actual experience that matters most and not the final outcome. I’d much rather have a blast creating something so-so than bored to tears, even if the end result was a masterpiece. Although that’s a perfectly subjective and completely undefinable term.

I hope that you’ve had a blast creating each and every wonderful thing you’ve posted this month! I know I’ve enjoyed seeing each and every watercolor you post! And if you haven’t yet, please, please consider making a donation to The Dreaming Zebra Foundation in honor of the month by clicking here. There’s not much time left, but I know that together we can make a huge impact on the lives of children. And I once again, of course, have something to give back to you! Today’s gift is for anyone who hasn’t yet gotten anything this month in either the official giveaways or these sample posts on Doodlewash. If you haven’t be told you’re getting something, then today may just be your day! I’m giving a Joe Miller Travel Painter Palette with a round sable brush to the first 10 people who comment with the phrase “Always Have Fun!” directly below in the comments on doodlewash.com. It’s a blast to use watercolors each and every day, especially on that lovely day when what you end up with turns out to be a mysterious concoction.

  1. This is a creative mashup for sure. I don’t drink alcohol but even I know you don’t drink alcohol with a straw. So maybe this is a lemonade iced tea, something I enjoy on a hot day, and maybe you do also. The fun of summer drinks is trying something new and the fun of watercolor is painting that moves by its own impulses. The drink looks festive – I imagine it tastes terrific!

  2. I think I’m already up for one of these from last time, but it seems that you indeed “Always Have Fun!” with the themes! The straw is looking great!

  3. Well I always have fun here! I call this combo my holy trinity. LOVE these colors. Re: the mango allergy? Do you have a latex allergy? Mango is cross reactive, as is pineapple and kiwi and a few other things. I feel for you as I have some food allergies that make me sad, like walnuts and some latex derivatives. but at least we can paint them 🙂

  4. This is way cool and I will drink your mango if you drink my booze which gives me heartburn and we will help each other out. Always have fun and no I don’t think I can win twice thanks for the first time though. 🙂

  5. Always have fun! I just learned of your beautiful work today from the Understanding Blue blog. I am thrilled to be following such a talented artist, I can’t wait to see more. ☺

    1. Thanks so much, Vicki! 😃💕 I really can’t thank you enough for those inspiring words. It’s tough to post each day, but I’m thrilled you enjoy them! And yay! I already have you down for a prize!

  6. Lol, today was definitely a fun experiment that resulted in a strange and wonderful abstract. And nope that isn’t what I set out to do… But that IS the fun part!

Your mystery drink looks refreshing… I hope you had as much fun as I did painting it 🙂

  7. I love your description of your interaction with watercolor. What I say is that “I’m busy painting in the middle of the picture and it’s busy working on the bottom” The majority of watercolors I make have minimal pre-planning, and lots of spontaneous action
