World Watercolor Month – Day 26 – Some Random Tart

Seeing a prompt of “free & easy” I just let my mind wander, and, as it often does, it lead me straight to a dessert. In this case, we have a fruit tart which is one of my favorite desserts, but not one that I have very often. I sadly didn’t get to enjoy it today either, so this is yet another one of my fantasy dessert illustrations. Keeping things free and easy, I only used 3 colors for this little doodlewash (listed below in the full post). I’m so fascinated by limited palettes and the range you can get from just a handful of colors. That said, I love having several choices at my disposal and will shift to a different small palette depending on the subject matter. As for creating desserts so often, it’s the best diet one can have. Simply imagining a dessert rather than consuming it, means less weight to gain. But if one of these had actually been sitting in front of me, I would not be so smug. I would instead devour it with glee, forgetting entirely that it’s not a healthy salad. That’s the beautiful thing about dessert. It’s meant to be enjoyed as a little reward, whether you’ve done something to deserve it or not. This, in my humble opinion, makes it the perfect food indeed.

And we are getting very close to the end of this most festive of occasions so I think a dessert is definitely in order. Some of you are ahead, depending on your location, but I personally have 5 more watercolors to go to conclude World Watercolor Month. Although I paint daily, and yes, we always have monthly watercolor art challenges here at Doodlewash, this month is incredibly special. There are hundreds more artists who participate in July, some leaving other mediums to focus on watercolor, and the energy and enthusiasm this year has been overwhelming! What makes my heart sing is that there are more people than ever about to complete the 31 watercolors in 31 days challenge! Yes, I’m watching each and every day, even if I don’t have time to comment. I can only hope many of you read these posts so I can let you each know that you’re all amazing. With each brush stroke you are making the world more beautiful and spreading a message of color and hope across the globe!

And, as we near the end of this event, please remember that it’s also a benefit for charity and helping to raise funds for our future artists. Many of you have contributed to our cause, and for that, I thank you and send you a virtual hug. If you haven’t yet, please consider making a donation to The Dreaming Zebra Foundation in honor of World Watercolor Month. Just $10 will get art supplies to a child, and most importantly, form an urge to create that will last for a lifetime. Each year, social media changes, hiding unpaid posts and throttling exposure, making it harder and harder for me to get this message out. So please, help me spread the word in these last days of the month! And, for your effort, I have something to give back to you as well! Today, I have 9 watercolour marker samples from our official sponsor Winsor & Newton for anyone who hasn’t yet gotten one of these. Simply comment below with “Thank you, Winsor & Newton!” to let me know you want one! Painting each day is such an amazing experience, whether you’re investing hours to create a large painting, or just taking a tiny bit of time to make some random tart.

  1. Looks tasty! That cookbook idea should really come out of the plans sometime in the future!
I believe I’m already signed for one of those from last week, but “Thank you, Winsor & Newton!”
After all, they do make the paints I always use!

  2. This is a lovely dessert Charlie with raspberries as one of my very favorite berries. It’s hard for me to believe I managed one painting… but 26, wow….I think I will have a dessert to celebrate. 😁 Only wish it was this one!! I have donated and am proudly spreading the word in hopes others will do the same. Love the painting.

  3. Your doodle wash for today looks yummy! Thank you and Winsor&Newton as I have received my watercolor marker and I am enjoying it. This has been a really enjoyable month celebrating watercolors. Viewing the art from people all over the world has been amazing. I have a lot to learn and I am having fun doing it. Thanks, Charlie for all your encouragement.

  4. Some random tart, huh? Oh my goodness, Charlie, you should have gotten about 10,000 new followers with that one, most of whom you don’t want following you.

It is a lovely painting of a delish dessert – but who knew?

  5. Your dessert looks so yummy – as usual. I didn’t manage to paint every day but at least I managed to keep up with Angela’s weekly challenge. But youare so inspiring and I hope I can do better next year. Will keep an eye on your monthly challenges. 😉

    1. Aww thanks so much!! And yeah, 31 watercolors is a big challenge! I’ll have prompts for 31 more in August launching tomorrow, but just hop in and play whenever you like! It’s just about having lots of fun! 😉💕

  6. I have to admit, I laughed when your post title came up in email – thought you were painting a girl on the street. 😀

This is beautiful. That sepia ink is wonderful with watercolor. I love a limited palette too. I have seven of them for my DS paints.

    1. Yeah, I just don’t do portraits! LOL I laughed when I wrote it and just hoped people wouldn’t be disappointed in another dessert instead. Glad you like this, Lydia! 😃💕 Yeah, I’m digging the sepia for a lot of these this month. I usually switch back to black when it’s glass or metal though.

  7. When you do limited palettes, do you choose the colors in advance and just work to constrain what you see into those colors, or do you just pick a random number and let the colors you choose evolve with what you see?
