World Watercolor Month – Day 29 – All The Colors In My Palette

Since today’s prompt was “rainbows,” I thought a fun experiment would be the opposite of a limited palette and I would paint using all 18 colors in my tiny little Joe Miller travel palette (the original has 12, but I added 6 more half pans). I would never recommend using all of your colors at once, but it was fun to play around and splash through them all and to rewet colors that I rarely ever use (sorry Sap Green, and you’re barely used here once again). And there really wasn’t a better model for such an experiment than a glass bowl full of candy. Not just any candy, of course, but that lovely hard candy that grandma always had. The kind that was almost too beautiful to sample and so usually ended up getting a little soft and stuck together in clumps. It was mostly meant to be decorative, I think, and to give off an inviting appearance that reflects good upbringing. I never much cared for the candy, but it was definitely a lovely centerpiece.

Sometimes, I’ve thought about having a bowl of candy like this one sitting out, but we don’t get enough visitors to impress so I haven’t done so. And I’m thinking I would actually sample them more than I should, so it’s probably for the best. I did get an odd silver reindeer bowl at Christmas with the intent of filling it with starlight mints. Not only did I fail to fill it, I failed to return it to the closet, so it’s still sitting on the table and now holds the remotes for the Luminara candles. I’m looking at it now thinking I should probably put it away and bring it back out for the holidays. But failing a better plan for those remotes, I think I’ll just leave well enough alone. I’m not really really sure where this stream of consciousness is leading me, but there are times when logic leaves us and those can be some of the most wonderful moments of all.

There’s just a couple days left of World Watercolor Month and it’s been an amazing month indeed! My favorite part has been hearing from so many people who have used the month to get back into painting again or to start for the very first time. Yay!   6. What a pretty dish of hard candy. There was always a dish sitting on the table at our house when I was a child. It’s one of the first things I buy at Christmas time along with the “Bob’s peppermint balls my grandfather liked. Great memories in a rainbow of colors.

  10. I’d like to try these Windsor & Newton water colour markers. I have a some by Letraset and I don’t find them easy to use. Fine as an accent but they seem to lack the softness of a brush and paint. The colour range is limited too. But “I Love Color!”.

      1. A pink water colour marker came today. Beautifully packed in a special folder, inside a specially designed envelope, inside a padded envelope. It was like one of those Russian dolls. There was also $9:50 in UAS postage paid. My goodness what a gift. Thank you to all involved. So exciting to get interesting mail. I will try it against the Letraset ones I have. Thanks once again Charlie.

  14. That bowl of candy is gorgwous and tour story reminded me of my Gram who Nips in all of her candy bowls, and of course her purse. They were always a bit on the stale side too, I’m surprised we didn’t break our teeth getting to the chocolate center. Thanks for the memory 🙂

  20. Those candies DID clump! I used to have a Mikasa bowl filled with them in my office. And art from local artists during my travels on my office wall and desk when I worked at the stuffy global firm. People would come to my office during the day for a quick chat and to breathe in that stuffy place! So the fancy candies didn’t clump in my office 🙂 as people ate them. I ordered one of your Doodlewash beach towels tonight – seemed PERFECT with your summer watercolor sketches all over it.

  24. I love all colors, Charlie. W&N is a great brand for watercolor painting. I enjoyed the challenge this month very much, although I could not paint every day. Watching other painting so many beautiful things, so creative and having contact with painters all over the world, is so wonderful and inspiring.

    No trip planned to your country but will go to Spain in October for a painting holiday.

    Charlie why do you like to paint food and candy so much? 😁

  29. Poor, neglected sap green. 😀 (I use sap all the time, but my pthalo green sits there like an unwanted wart on the bottom of one’s foot.) Clearly, we need to get you out here into the forestlands to give you a reason to sap it up more often. 🙂
